8th Grade win Birkenhead Tournament

Birkenhead 8th Grade Invitation Tournament 16th August 2009

After 3 postponements due to the weather, the tournament was all go. Pressure had mounted on the team after seeing such excellent results and wins for both the 6th & 7th Grade teams the previous weeks at Birkenhead.
During our warm-up for the first game we suffered a 'minor' setback when our goal keeper injured his hand and was unable to play the first game.!
The first two games went according to the plan, with comfortable wins, conceding only one goal and scoring 8. Our sternest test to date came when we faced the impressive Three Kings Spain. This was a scrappy affair with neither side gaining ascendancy in the first half.
After half time all the team applied themselves and placed Three Kings under real pressure, and with seconds to go the score was still locked up at nil all, when just as the official was about to sound the hooter, we managed to score a well constructed and superbly finished goal….! The Three kings players were visibly upset at losing to us. The next pool game was a one sided affair with the score line flattering our opposition, we peppered the goal and were unlucky only to score three, as without the Bucklands Beach keepers heroics it could have easily blown out to 8 plus. The next pool game was a close fought encounter against Forrest Hill, which we came out the better of by two goals.
The semi final was against a very accomplished and polished Fencibles team who came into this tournament as favourites after their win the Three Kings tournament two weeks ago. This initial favouritism did not really show on the field as Bays time and time again mounted great attacks and managed to slot 3 unanswered goals into the back of the net…The final was next…
Our opponent for the final was the Three Kings Germany team. We knew little about them but approached the game with a healthy respect. East Coast Bays dominated the encountered and spent at least 80% of the game camped in front of Three kings goalmouth, it was not until the dying stages of the first half that we breached the swarming defence and scored what turned out to be the sole and winning goal…Yeah Trophy time..
A big thanks to all the parents, coaches and most of all a group of talented young footballers..you made everyone very proud..roll on next week.
