6th Grade Eagles began their season on a high, taking out the Birkenhead Tournament after two games of extra time and with only 7 players.
The fields and conditions were great but before kick-off of our first game, young Matthew Skilton concussed himself while fetching a ball and ended up going to the hospital and subsequently home for rest. Our table-round games against Hibiscus Coast and Bucklands Beach Buccaneers were easy enough wins and it was easy enough to regularly rotate the team positions and the bench (4-0 and 7-0, respectively). It was great to see diversity of goal scorers in the team, and the team really enjoy their football.
Our semi-final game against Three Kings was tough. Three Kings had won their preliminary round also having won 6-0 and 9-0 so we knew we were up against it. Our first goal was disallowed as the ref judged that it hadn’t sufficiently crossed the line and then before we knew it we were 1-0 down. The team ran their hearts out and finally got the equalizer. The game went to extra time and it seemed it was only a matter of time when we would score. A number of shots just went outside the post and it was just prior to the final hooter when we scored the final goal.
It was on to the finals (Fencibles United), and the games were getting longer. The boys had now played two times 20 minutes and a further 30 minute game. The final was 30 minutes regulation football with 10 minutes extra time. Our boys ran the whole time, giving it everything they had. Their teamwork and discipline in holding formation (at 6 years old!) meant that they never conceded a goal and came close to scoring on a number of occasions with a few shots just going wide and one just over the cross bar (some of our boys are used to 7th grade sized goals). The regulation time and extra time was soon up with a 10 meter shoot out remaining. Once again we needed to come from behind and that we did winning 4-3 to take the boys’ first tournament in grand style.
To the Eagles: Blake Davies, Harrison Dietrich, Stephanos Georgiou, Daniel Malik, Aiden McCarthy, James Sadlier, Matthew Skilton, Brandon Stewart, excellent job on your first tournament. Thanks for giving your best for the team, awesome! To the parents your total encouragement of these budding stars carried them. Enjoy ‘parading’ the trophies and certificates! Thanks for your support, Ross and Aaron.
