ECB 4 Waitakere City 1 played 31/05/2009

Going a goal down after five minutes is not the ideal way to start a match but Bays finally got their act together and produced some sublime football, sweeping aside nearest challengers, Waitakere City 4-1 at Fred Taylor Park. It was Waitakere"s first corner in the fifth minute which somehow passed by the Bays defenders before taking a touch off a Waitakere player and ending up in the back of the net to give the home team an early lead. Jeff Campbell had a chance to equalise three minutes later but was unsuccesful and a corner just before the quarter hour saw Phil Edginton bundle the ball into the net for what Bays supporters thought was the equaliser only for it to be disallowed, apparently for hand ball. Four minutes later Bays were back in the game. Dan Peat received a pass from Nick Hyde and set of on one of his runs, evading three defenders before slotting the ball past the Waitakere keeper into the net. Two minutes later Bays were in front. Another attack found Waitakere at sixes and sevens. The ball was cleared but straight to Avi Estrin, who from just outside the box placed his shot wide of defenders into the corner of the net. Bays continued to press for the rest of the half but Peat, Campbell, Hyde and Joe Bresnahan were all denied by some good goalkeeping. The second half was dominated by Bays but Waitakere were tenacious in defence and bays profligate in attack. The third goal arrived in the 64th minute courtesy of a colossal goalkeeping blunder that had the Waitakere supporters spluttering into their beer. The Waitakere keeper came well outside his area to clear a through ball but found himself up against Jason McKeown who robbed him and calmly steered the ball into an empty net sealing the game. It was all Bays now and Both Campbell and George Suri squandered good chances before Suri found himself in front to goal with only the keeper to beat and this time made no mistake. A great team performance, especially from a dominant midfield. Team: Gwilt, Forrest, Hyde, Edginton, Beguely, Webster, Campbell (Kubicki 85), Estrin (Suri 58), Bresnahan, Peat, McKeown (Morgan-Howell 77). Scorers: Peat 18, Estrin 20, McKeown 64, Suri 81
