Dave Brereton"s 9th grade East Coast Bays team travelled south to Hamilton for the delayed pre-season tournament last weekend. On paper it looked a tough draw with Papakura, Three Kings and two unknown local sides in Bays group, the top two progressing to the championship knock out. First up were a strong Papakura Rangers side in the first pool game, the South Aucklanders were quick to get in their stride taking a 1-0 lead which they were able to hold onto to take maximum points. As it turned out this would be the only goal Bays would concede in normal time at the tournament. The next two games against Hukanui Rototuna and Hamilton North were completely dominated by East Coast Bays with two consecutive 6-0 victories. Goals from Joshua Blackman 4, Jacob Hayward 2, Luke Schaffer-Swan 2, Stan Hitchcock 2, Daniel Mitten 1 and Ryan Zent 1. A deflected cross from Stan Hitchcock in the final pool game, against Three Kings gave Bays the 1-0 win they needed to progress to the championship quarter final, although it took a fine one handed save by Daniel Windleburn late in the game to ensure the 3 points. After a 0-0 finish in the quarter final against Cambridge, the game went to a penalty shootout, with keeper Daniel Windelburn staring between the posts, saving every shot on target, Bays eventually taking the game. The semi-final against Hukanui Rototuna"s other entrant was to be a repeat of the previous game. Bays dominating possession in the middle of park but unable to push on to get the goal they needed, another tense shoot-out going Bay"s way. In the final against Bucklands Beach the back pair of Callum Poole and Matthew Lamont created a solid platform for Bays to again hold their own in the middle of the park. Bucklands Beach looked happy to soak up the pressure, at times looking dangerous on the break but the game was destined for yet another penalty shoot out. Daniel Windelburn again in outstanding form to keep the opposition scoreless. Blake DeNys eventually hammering the ball home for an ECB"s victory. Thanks to Dave Breereton, our coach and parents/supporters. The boys represented the club very well and have become a good group of friends with a lot of spirit.
