Bays exit Chatham Cup- out on penalties

East Coast Bays have never performed well in penalty shootouts and proved it again, losing 7-6 to Manurewa after being 1-1 at the end of extra time. This was a game that should never have gone that far as Bays dominated the game but again couldn't find the back of the net. Dan Peat and Jack Beguely had early strikes on goal but the game then settled down to Bays playing some pretty passing football keeping Manurewa on the back foot, but becoming abysmal when in front of goal.

Aidan Gwilt pulled off two great saves part way through the half but was otherwise unemployed as both sides gave the ball away so often the groans from the grandstand got louder and louder from both sets of frustrated spectators.

The game was scoreless at half time but any hope of a better second half was quickly extinguished as both sides failed to keep possession and were equally woeful in front of goal. As the minutes ticked away, the urgency just wasn't there with all the great lead up work wasted time and time again. Stoppage time came and in the third minute Bays had the ball in the net after the Rewa keeper dropped the ball but the referee ruled the goal out claiming the Nick Hyde was backing into the keeper.

So to extra time, Manurewa's keeper pulled off two good saves. Then with two minutes remaining a rare Manurewa attack caught the Bays defence off guard and their Number 11 headed the ball home. Bays attacked from the kick off and Dan Morgan-Howell floated a cross to George Suri who lobbed his header over the keeper for the equaliser.

Then to penalty kicks, Morgan-Howell, Ryan Zoghby, Hyde, Tom Davis, Glen Forrest and Joe Bresnahan all converted their chances but four others were either missed or saved by the keeper. Gwilt made three saves but Manurewa were more accurate from the spot.

Defensively, Bays were superb but on attack woeful. Chances were created but not put away.

Team: Gwilt, Forrest, Hyde, Suri, Zoghby, Webster, Bresnahan, Van Rooyen (Nawo 69), Peat (Davis 78), Beguely (McKeown 69), Morgan-Howell

Scorers: Suri 117
