Bays through to R2 of Chatham Cup

It was a little too close at the halftime break but East Coast Bays at the end came away from Te Puna with a comfortable 8-1 win over AFC Fury. The pitch was large but bumpy but it took only three minutes for Bays to open the scoring. They won a corner which Fury were unable to clear and Phil Edginton found himself right in front of goal with the ball and made no mistake. The score should have doubled six minutes later following a good run by Dan Peat but Arek Kubicki put his shot over the bar from close in. Fury got on the scoreboard in the 22nd minute when a bad bounce deceived the defence and Sam Jewell had little choice but to bring down the advancing Fury striker. Lucky not to be carded, he was unable to save the resulting penalty kick. Bays continued to press but the finishing was woeful, with Kubicki missing again and Peat spurning three gilt-edged chances. Fury were having trouble with set plays and two minutes before the break, the Bays supporters breathed a little easier when Edginton got on to a Jeff Campbell free kick to put bays back in the lead. Bays came out full of fire after the break and the fury keeper was called into action, saving well from a corner. But the pressure was starting to tell and the third goal came when an attempted clearance by a Fury defender came off the outside of his boot for a spectacular own goal that gave his keeper no chance. Two minutes later, from another corner, Edginton had his hat trick and the game was safe. Joe Bresnahan headed home from another set play to make it 5-1 and with six minutes remaining, Edginton headed in his fourth and number six for Bays. Two further goals in stoppage time to Glen Forrest and Daniel Morgan-Howell blew out the scoreline, giving Bays an 8-1 victory. Phil Edginton"s four goal haul was the highlight of the match but some poor finishing from the strikers in the first half kept the hardy band of supporters nervous.
