The Premiers and Development team have finished their season.
East Coast Bays advanced to Round 3 of the Chatham Cup coming from behind to beat Papakura City 5-2 at McLennan Park.
The first half was frankly horrible with missed chances galore coupled with a mishmash of bad passing and giving the ball away. Any good play came courtesy of Papakura and they deservedly took the lead just past the half hour with a stunning strike from former Fijian international Api Smith. The man mountain received the ball wide on the right flank and curled an unstoppable shot into the corner of the net giving Alex Carr no chance.
Bays started to get going after this, putting pressure on the Papakura defence but it was the last minute of stoppage time in the half when they finally equalised.
A Jason McKeown shot was not cleared and Dylan Stansfield was on hand to smack the ball into the net, seconds before the half time whistle.
Fortunately for the spectators, a game of football broke out in the second half. Stansfield was just wide from a Judd Baker pass as bays started to take control but were let down by poor finishing.
Papakura then had a chance to retake the lead after ten minutes but missed an absolute sitter in front of goal.
That miss cost them as Bays took the lead minutes later. Good work involving Dan Peat, Baker and Stansfield down the left flank drew the Papakura defence, the ball was crossed to Kieran McMinn who slipped the ball past the keeper.
Another good move several minutes later saw John White get the ball to Stansfield down the right flank, moving to the corner flag he took on his marker, crossing the ball to an unmarked Peat who volleyed home from close to the penalty spot.
Stansfield should have done better after being put through instead of hitting his shot well over the bar but Bays won a corner moments later and Mckeown’s cross found Alec Solomons who headed in at the far post.
Two minutes later Stansfield and Peat were at it again. Another cross from Stansfield found Peat and it was 5-1 to Bays.
Papakura kicked off and found their way to the Bays penalty area, a player went down with a loud squeal. The referee pointed to the penalty spot and Harry Hillary Jenkins made no mistake. I’m still not sure what the penalty was for.
Bays hit back and Stansfield had a shot cleared off the line and then had another chance deflected for a corner. Peat had a chance to notch a hat trick but his shot was high and wide.
As time ran out, McKeown had his shot blocked and McMinn failed to put away the rebound.
A much better second half performance, shame about the first 45 minutes.
