The Premiers and Development team have finished their season.
With two teams and their coaches willing to play football, it was an enthralling game at Kiwitea Street with the result in doubt up to the last kick of the game.
The facilities are top class and the pitch was in perfect condition when the teams kicked off and Judd Baker had the first strike of the game, which was just wide. At the other end, Alex Carr was called upon to save from Finn Cochran as play moved from end to end with both sides creating and denying chances.
Zane Olla was just off-target from a Baker cross, Carr saved a header from Adam Mitchell, Alec Solomons saw his drive blocked for a corner, Andre De Jong and Mario Ilich had chances, Dillon Barnett had his shot cleared off the line, Carr saved at feet and Solomons saw his header cleared off the line.
That was all in the first twenty minutes.
Just past the hour, Carr saved from Regont Murati, the ball was partly cleared, finding Takuya Iwata on the edge of the penalty area and his volley swept into the top of the net, giving Central the lead.
Baker had a chance saved by keeper Danyon Drake, who was playing in more of a sweeper role rather than that of goalkeeper, and as the half wound down, a Vincent Pineau chip was goalbound only to be headed off the line by Solomons.
The second half continued in the same manner and was six minutes old when Bays won a free kick. Lee Robinson’s shot was headed on by Solomons, finding Joe Bresnahan, who finished from an acute angle to level the score.
Play continued, end to end, with Central having a corner cleared off the line and De Jong denied twice within moments as Drake tipped the first chance over the bar and saved at this feet from the resultant corner.
Central regained the lead in the 73rd minute when Solomons lost the ball in midfield, Murati made a break passing to Nicolas Zambrano who gave Carr no chance from close range.
Jack Anderson saw his strike saved by Drake while at the other end, Carr saved at the feet of Murati and then denied Iwata with a great save.
Play entered the last ten minutes with both sides going for it. A quick Bays throw in found Barnett who crossed to Anderson who placed a low drive beyond Drake to level the scores.
A 90th minute attack from Central saw Carr save a free kick and the ball was then cleared off the line.
Into stoppage time and a draw seemed likely, the ball found Solomons out on the right flank, he cut inside and placed his shot wide of Drake and just inside the far post. The ball crossed the line seconds before the final whistle sounded.
Jubilation for Bays, despair for Central. A great game played in fine spirit and a superb team effort. Wish this could happen every week.
