The Premiers and Development team have finished their season.
East Coast Bays advanced to the last 16 of the Chatham Cup with a 2-0 win over a gutsy Waiuku team. Inept finishing meant that it came down to the last minutes before the game was safe.
After opening gambits from both teams, Bays started to dominate with Joe Bresnahan taking the first strike which was wide. Waiuku’s keeper, Justin Baldwin, then saved from Dylan Stansfield but wasn’t called on to make a proper save for the rest of the half as although Bays peppered the goal, nothing was on target.
James Anderson headed wide from a corner, Judd Baker (twice), Zane Olla and Kieran McMinn were off target, Bresnahan, Lee Robinson and Baker had attempts blocked by defenders.
Alex Carr had to make a save from a Waiuku free kick, but the final minutes of the half saw Robinson, Baker and Avi Estrin all off target.
Playing into the wind in the second half, Bays controlled the ball better than they did with the wind behind them and finally opened the scoring, in the 54th minute when Stansfield headed home from an Andre De Jong corner.
A Waiuku break five minutes later, looked dangerous, but an excellent block by Olla on Derek Sinclair, snuffed out the chance.
A Robinson break forced a corner and Baldwin got to a Brock Messenger cross seconds before the Bays strikers.
Carr hadn’t had a lot to do n the half, but stayed alert to deny Cody Ralph with an excellent save. At the other end, Baldwin made two great saves in succession to deny Baker and Jack Anderson.
The game was winding down when De Jong let fly, Baldwin could only parry the shot and Baker was on hand to tap home from two metres.
Luke Chapman tried for a consolation in the last minute but couldn’t get past Carr while John White was denied twice in stoppage time.
Not a good game to watch, but Bays are through to the next round,
