The Premiers and Development team have finished their season.
I’m still trying to work out how we lost this game. The team didn’t play badly, they turned on a solid performance, creating chances, but sadly not putting them away. Ngaruawahia are facing relegation and this predicament tends to focus the mind, they played with determination, putting their bodies on the line in defence, backed up by a strong display in goal from Danyon Drake.
The visitors were the first to fire a shot in anger but it whistled harmlessly over the crossbar. Bays hit back as first Mario Hofmann was blocked by Drake who then saved from Deklan Wynne and then took the ball off the foot of Dylan Stansfield in a frantic few moments.
More was to come from Bays as they dominated the half. Another Stansfield strike was diverted for a corner, Dan Peat was wide, Luiz Del Monte couldn’t beat Drake who then cut out a Wynne cross and dealt with another Stansfield attempt. In the closing minutes of the half both Hofmann and Stansfield put chances wide..
Andre De Jong had a chance early in the second half but missed the target then Ngaruawahia mounted a rare attack minutes later, Aidan Gwilt couldn’t hold the shot and Jama Boss was on hand to bundle the ball into the net to give the visitors the lead against the run of play.
This goal resulted in a triple substitution by Willy Gerdsen and Bays launched a series of attacks, peppering the Ngaruawahia goal with a series of crosses which Drake cut out with ease. The long ball attack into the penalty area was not working.
Into the last ten minutes and Ngaruawahia made a break, the ball wasn’t cleared and ben Latham was on hand to drive the ball into the net and give the visitors a two goal cushion. Just like last week, Bays hit back straight from the kick off and a Jason McKeown drive into the corner of the net pulled a goal back.
Any chance of gaining even a point dried up as Ngaruawahia parked the bus and even the loss of Marcelo Sosa to a stoppage time red card for a bad foul couldn’t prevent the inevitable. Joy for Ngaruawahia on their first win of the season and head scratching for Bay. “How did that one get away?”
