12th Grade Victory in Nelson for Mainland Cup

Months of fundraising, training and preparation finally got to the point
of flying into Nelson, for the 12th grade Victory team. Looking the part
in their tour hoodies were the squad of 11 and a further 18 people on
the tour party to provide the 'support'. A quick stretch of legs the
night before and the team were ready to launch into the Mainland cup.

Waking up to a decent South Island frost on Wednesday saw some very cold
kids and some lessons learnt, with a first up loss. It was a shock to
the system for sure and the boys bounced back with superb wins against
some real quality opposition after that. We ended tied on points at the
top of our pool, finishing 2nd on goal difference. Each game was the
full 50 minutes, so tired but happy boys at the end of day 1. Our 2nd
place ensured a crack at the championship semis and a guaranteed play
off game after that. Auckland's Eastern Suburbs in the championship
semi - They really played some superb football in the first 25 ending 2
to nil up. The boys fought back and camped in the opposition half for
80% of the 2nd half, but couldn't quite find those 2 goals.
Disappointed yeah - ready to take that out on the other losing semi team
in the 3rd place play off - too right.

Waimak came out hard but the ECB boys played some really attractive
football, with coach Georgiou calling for a controlled 3 touch game
plan, to put the game beyond doubt. Some real grit and pushing of bodies
beyond normal limits, ended the tournament with a win and 3rd place
behind Suburbs taking out the comp. The boys objective was 1st. Taking
3rd was well deserved, with the parents treated to some quality football
and real team unity, across the two days. Five 50 minute games in 2
days, while tiring, has pushed the abilities of all players upwards and
coach Georgiou and assistants were well pleased with the level of
commitment and drive from all.

Capping of a tremendous 3 days for the tour party was an evening under
the stars, BBQ and around the fire at a team benefactors residence...
The boys larking it up and having some real fun.

With the taste of a football tour fresh in their minds, it's back to
some serious fundraising for the boys. 2015 will see the squad flying a
little further... to the Gold Coast, with a detour to Nelson for another
crack at the Mainland Cup.
