12th Grade ‘Victory’ – Quality Football at Papamoa
The 12th grade 1st division ‘Victory’ squad, headed down to the annual Papamoa tournament on 6 July 2014.
With 3 quality 13th grade teams in our pool, the focus was on playing our usual high intensity, speed based football, with accurate control and finishing. The comparable size and speed of the opposition clearly didn’t phase the boys, with an extremely tight and physical first up game knocking over Otumoetai 2 to 0. An outstanding game and start. This was followed up by a stunning win against home town Tauranga Rovers, who size wise stood over our squad and skill wise were our match. High intensity football, quality passing and distribution and some quite brilliant finishing saw a 3 to 0 win after 20 minutes of play. A final pool game and win against Papatoetoe saw a slow start, a few sprayed shots and the odd heart failure on the coaching bench – as the 2nd 10 minutes kicked off the team dynamic lifted and some real scrambling and high intensity at the end of the game, saw a goal cross the line for us.
The day ended with a fantastic post pool game against Manurewa, with the tournament champs squeezing one goal past the boys towards games end. Heads were held high and for Coach Georgiou and assistants, the day was an extremely successful continuation of the rising success and high speed/ quality skill based football that the squad has been focusing on. Also having just one goal against all day, was a real compliment to some clinically good goal keeping. With a fantastic support crew of parents contributing behind the scenes and on the side line, the sense of team believe and confidence is quite evident to all.
On the back of some great fundraising efforts, the next step for this Victory squad is the Nelson Mainland Cup, 2nd week school holidays. The boys are looking forward to their tour! More on that later…
