On Sunday June 15 the ECB Patterson team (currently playing up in Championship Girls 13th Grade Premier) become Team Switzerland for the World Cup Tournament at Otumoetai FC in Tauranga.
The team traveled after Saturday morning football and spent the evening celebrating coach Mark Patterson’s birthday before heading out to a magical coastline location on a sunny and crisp Sunday.
The girls played well and in pool play had a draw and two close (one goal only) losses. In the semi-final they won on penalty shootout, which set us up well for the Plate Final. Sadly the team of nine started feeling the impact of having no subs and weary legs were observed. Regardless it was a well-played game which we unfortunately lost 2-nil.
The girls received lots of praise and support on the day and comments such as “well they’re pretty good for all girls” and “what awesome skills and tenacity they all have” were heard from other teams and their supporters.
On the more fun side of the tournament we were the only all girls team – and if you check the photos below you’ll see that even extended on the day to our coach and assistant coach! We had three strip changes (only two by design but there were many red shirted teams!), an awesome pre-game Swiss style team dance and our efforts earned us the prize for Best Dressed team.
Many of the girls had never worn their hair in plaits, nor donned hats with flowers, but they were in great spirits on and off the fields and true ambassadors for girls football in Auckland.
Team Switzerland was Lara Wilson, Mia Thomas, Kaitlyn Moratti, Jessica Wansink, Jessica Patterson, Julia Ford,Olivia van Kuyk, Holly Strong and Rhiannon Phoenix. Holly Strong was acknowledged most by her peers and awarded player of the tournament.
Big thanks to the girls for their consistent energetic play, the parents for their ongoing support of the team, the organisers for a well-run and fun tournament and for the club in helping us to attend.
