The Premiers and Development team have finished their season.
It was a disastrous start at Centennial Park, a goal down after three minutes, the result of a dreadful back pass that Aidan Gwilt could only partly clear and Ngaruawahia’s Kieran Frewen was on hand to put the ball in the back of the net.
Three minutes later Bays were level. An Emmanuel Darwa shot from some 25 metres was tipped over the bar. The resultant corner from Andre De Jong found Mario Hoffman unmarked and he made no mistake with his header.
Hoffman changed from scorer to provider six minutes later when he charged down an attempted clearance and crossed the ball. Keeper Danyon Drake could only parry the ball straight to Dillon Barnett who made no mistake with a low drive into the corner of the net..
Goal number three came six minutes later following a run by De Jong who found Hoffman with a pass, his drive across the goalmouth was turned in by Joe Bresnahan by the far goalpost.
Play continued back and forth until just after the half hour when Drake saved Darkwa’s cross at the feet of the Bays attack. The clearance was retrieved by Bays and a further attack launched resulting in a corner. This De Jong corner was missed by the Ngaruawahia defence and Elias Scoponi planted a header past the keeper to make it 4-1 to Bays.
Darkwa then proved what a good defender he in to break up a Ngaruawahia attack before both teams headed for the half time break.
Bays continued their domination early into the second half. Ngaruawahia’s keeper made some fine saves to deny Hoffman and De Jong while Darkwa missed an absolute sitter after being set up by De Jong and Barnett was stopped on the edge of the box.
Goal number five came in the 69th minute when De Jong was put through by Hoffman and outrunning the defender, put a low drive past the keeper.
Ngaruawahia came back into the game and a deflected shot had to be scrambled off the line. Captain Joe Bresnahan was then forced off with a bad injury following a collision.
Ngaruawahia pulled one back in the 7th minute. It appeared that Gwilt was fouled while trying to collect the ball but the referee saw it differently and awarded a penalty, which Steve Morrison duly converted.
Bays then saw out the remainder of the game to take the points.
A good win away from home blighted somewhat by the potentially season-ending injury to Bresnahan who is spending the next few days in Waikato Hospital following an operation. All wish him a speedy recovery.
