ECB 1 Waitakere City 1 played 10/08/2013 at Bays

Both teams needed the points, Bays to continue their championship quest and Waitakere to get clear of the relegation zone, so a draw was not ideal for either.

It all started so well for Waitakere, a second minute shot from Roy Krishna was fumbled by Alex Carr who was deceived by the bounce of the ball. Rory Turner was on hand to force the ball over the line.  I thought the ball had already crossed the line before Turner got there, but Waitakere can sort that problem out.

Stung by this setback, Bays fought back. Eric Jones-Seekie shot wide and Deklan Wynne was sent through by a great Jason McKeown pass only to put his strike over the bar while Krishna shot wide at the other end.

The equalizer came in the 24th minute from a fine move. Wynne crossed the ball from the left to Luiz Del Monte who cut the ball across the face of the goalmouth and Jason Hicks was on hand to finish off from close range.

The rest of the half was an evenly fought midfield contest Jones-Seekie had a shot deflected for a corner while Dillon Barnett was denied by the keeper.

Bays almost took the lead in the first minute of the second half. A McKeown strike was deflected by a Waitakere defender, completely wrong-footing the keeper, only to squirm centimetres past the upright.

Bays were on top for the net twenty-five minutes or so. A Barnett header was blocked on the line and a Hicks drive deflected.

Carr saved from Turner as Waitakere made a foray, the ball came back to Bays who attacked and there was a goalmouth scramble but the ball wouldn’t go in.

In the last fifteen minutes, both side threw everything into grabbing the winning goal. A great ball from Del Monte just eluded Hicks and Carr again denied Turner. Carr again blocked a drive and Jack Beguley made sure of the clearance.

With six minutes remaining, Carr atoned for his earlier mistake, pulling off a great save from a Krishna drive. At the other end Del Monte had a cross cleared off the line. McKeown saw his drive blocked and deep into stoppage time a Del Monte free kick was turned for a corner and both sides had to be content with a share of the points.

Team:  Carr, Beguely, Carpenter, Azame, Wynne, Bresnahan, McKeown, Hicks,

Del Monte, Jones-Seekie, Barnett (Munday 64).

The Development team dealt to Waitakere reserves with a 7-2 thrashing. Te Rui Carter and Elliott Dooley each scored twice with other goals coming from a Connor Daw  penalty, Wesley Baldwin and Pablo Hormazabal.
