The Premiers and Development team have finished their season.
East Coast Bays wasted a bundle of chances but were still to good for Ellerslie and although the scoreline was close, Bays never looked like losing.
Ellerslie’s goalkeeper, Sean Dowling, was in action as early as the fifth minute, diving to turn a Jason Hicks drive for a corner and from subsequent play turning a Dillon Barnett drive over the bar.
The resultant corner was played wide to Luiz Del Monte instead of being driven in to the penalty area. Del Monte then sent a lovely ball to the far post where Kris Carpenter met it to head past Dowling into the net and Bays were one up.
Barnett was put through minutes later only to be pulled up for offside, Hicks had a freekick blocked and Mikael Munday saw his drive go just wide of the upright.
It wasn’t all one way. Ellerslie had the ball in the net just on the half hour only to be denied by the offside flag and Alex Carr had to make a smart save to deny Nathan Palmer.
Barnett had the ball on the back of the net at the other end only to be also denied by an offside flag and was denied again by Dowling moments later.
Halftime came with Bays leading 1-0.
Ellerslie regrouped during the break, tightening their defence, and were the first to fire a shot in anger which was repulsed and Dowling was forced to pull off a good save to thwart Munday.
Jack Beguely went on a run and his cross came very close to being put into their own net by the Ellerslie defence. A Barnett cross was cut out and a Del Monte drive saved by Dowling just past the hour.
Nathan Buswell came on as a substitute and should have scored after being out through, instead he blasted over the bar. Bays continued to press and Ellerslie defend as the game wound down.
Another three points closer to the championship. It wasn’t pretty but a win is a win especially at this stage of the season.
Team: Carr, Beguely, Carpenter, Azame, Wynne, McKeown, Munday, Hicks (Darkwa 76), Del Monte (Buswell 69), Jones-Seekie (Escolme 75), Barnett

The Development Team turned the tables on Ellerslie who had beaten them earlier in the season with a good 2-0 win. All square at half-time, second half goals to Te Rui Carter and Wesley Baldwin secured the points for a very good win.
