Manurewa 1 ECB 2 played 27/07/2013 at Memorial Par

What a difference a week can make. From playing on a carpet at Kiwitea St last Sunday to what can only be described as a paddock, suitable perhaps for a lower grade rugby game but not up to standard for top football. Poor work by those who maintain this ground.

Bays were in control right from the start, spending most of the half camped in the Manurewa half, being denied only by ground conditions and some desperate defending. Mikael Munday had a great run only to be blocked at the expense of a corner, Jason Hick’s corner kick was turned for another corner, which was wasted when Hicks put his shot over the bar.  A Luiz Del Monte free kick just eluded Baptiste Azame and Louie Caunter saved from Dillon Barnett.

A rare break by Manurewa in the twentieth minute saw Michael Smith in with a chance but a great save from Alex Carr denied him.

Caunter again denied Barnett just on the half hour and denied him again eight minutes later. Bays then forced a series of corners.

Then with a minute remaining of time in the first half a great passing movement involving Del Monte, Hicks and Jason McKeown tore through the Manurewa defence and was finished off by Del Monte with a fine drive into the top of the net to give Bays a 1-0 half time lead.

The second half was a continuation of the first with Bays dominating. Hicks was just wide, Barnett broke through the defence but was ruled offside, a great pass from Joe Bresnahan found Del Monte in the box but weight of numbers forced him off the ball. A Deklan Wynne cross to Hicks saw his shot blocked and McKeown was wide on the follow up.

Just past the hour, Del Monte had a drive blocked but two minutes later, Barnett won the ball, passed to Hicks who sent Del Monte through and he made no mistake to double the score.

Caunter again stopped Barnett before Manurewa kept the Bays defence on their toes firstly from a free kick then Jack Beguely was quick to block Smith.

With the clock winding down, Manurewa scored. A Smith drive was blocked and the ball went to Brad Rathbun who seemed offside to everyone except the Assistant Referee, and he guided the ball into the net from close range.

In the last minute, Hicks saw his drive blocked by his own team mate but Bays secured the points to keep them in top place.

Team: Carr, Beguely, Azame, Edginton, Wynne, Bresnahan, McKeown, Munday (Jones-Seekie 57), Del Monte (Buswell 85), Hicks, Barnett (Escolme 77)

Scorers:  Del Monte 44, 63
