Papamoa 9th Grade Tournament
With a depleted squad Team Wood headed off to Papamoa in the search of more silverware for the Club Trophy cabinet.
Game one kicked off against Waipuna Lightning with ECB Wood running rampant scoring 5 goals to 1. Game two of pool play we faced Otumoetai Strikers, and despite the high possession advantage we were unable to put the ball in the back of the net. Late in the match Otumoetai took full advantage of a break away and took the lead. End result, 0-1. Game three we met our arch nemesis Fencibles. The Fencibles players appeared to be bigger, stronger and faster which unfortunately outweighed our skill level. Fencibles run away with a 6-0 win, could have been double that had it not been for goal keeper, Jayden Deacon. Final pool play match we faced a determined home side, Papamoa Thunder. Again, despite continued pressure we were unable to score, resulting in a 0-0 scoreline.
Due to these results we found ourselves in the Plate semi final against Cambridge. We were put on the back foot early in the first half when a goal was awarded to a player who was blatantly off side. A solid strike by Joe Joyce bought us level with only minutes to go. 1-1 at full time meant we were straight off to a penalty shoot out. Goal keeper Jayden Deacon showed his prowess between the sticks when he comfortably saved the first two penalties. Our penalty takers held their nerve and we went into the Final of the Plate, 4-2 on penalties.
In the Final we came up against the Greenhithe Vipers. Both teams failed to take their chances in the first half. ECB Wood put in a solid performance in the second half, with Nathan Chapman scoring the only goal of the match.
