The Premiers and Development team have finished their season.
Not the one we were after, but a winner’s trophy none-the-less. After an anything but normal league game on Saturday Team Teplov travelled to the Bay of Plenty for the Papamoa mid-season tournament.
Sunday morning commenced, cold, clear with a stiff south westerly wind. The draw had us playing some old foes, and some unknowns, an intriguing mix. The 1st pool round saw us scrape a win against Waipuna Hotspurs (last gasp penalty), our next opponents were the Taupo Blues, another unknown quantity..the boys won 2 nil..missing the easy but creating the hard..up next were Hibiscus Coast..the team that beat us in local league the day before..after an expected “interesting” game with 45 seconds to go we conceded a soft/lucky, goal..( hate toe pokes!)..bother!..On to the next game.. the eternally impressive and all conquering Three Kings.. a game that went by so fast.. rushing defence..crunching tackles, missed opportunities and dynamic saves by both teams, an enthralling football game.. edge of the seat viewing.. with 42 seconds remaining..yup another heartbreaker... so ‘we’ were in the plate semi’s...against a school team of giants..Aquinas College (No neither did I ).. another last gasp effort and we were through to the Final.. Oh Yeah..! Final football games are generally dour affairs,, not this.. the boys lifted and played good passing and aggressive structured football.. we scored 3 scintillating goals to win the plate final...trophy time.!
What is more impressive is that many of this team have never played in a tournament before.. almost got a smile from the coach..! If anyone queries the value of development teams in ECB and the fostering depth of talent.. then look no further than these boys. As a side line what a BBQ..!
Huge thanks to Mr “T” the coach.. and all the wonderful parents who trekked to Tauranga ,and to the players.. “ Go the mighty Bays”
