Bays exit Chatham Cup

A woeful East Coast Bays side exited the Chatham Cup with an ill-disciplined display against Bay Olympic and will now have to concentrate on winning the league to ensure a successful season.

The team started badly without their normal combinations and it took only six minutes for Olympic to open the scoring when Maxsim Manko was allowed to turn in the box and fire a shot low into the corner of the net.

Olympic continued to apply pressure with Ryan Elder and Craig Wylie coming close and Kris Carpenter blocking a James Pritchett header.

Bays had a great chance in the 25th minute when Emmanuel Darkwa made a great run down the right and crossed the ball to find a hard charging Joe Bresnahan who got his head to the ball only to put the chance wide.

At the other end a poor clearance gave Chad Coombes a chance but this went wide also.

The remainder of the half was fairly even but as halftime approached Bays were handed a chance when Coombes was adjudged to have handled the ball when clearing a Bays attack.  Bresnahan took the penalty, which was parried by the keeper but he was first to the rebound and it was 1-1 at halftime.

Any chance of Bays getting back into the game after the break evaporated after four minutes of the second half when Carpenter was unlucky to be pinged for handball when trying to block a cross, the ball being driven at him from close range. Manko made no mistake from the spot.

The defence was missing seven minutes later when Kyosake Kitano was unmarked and headed home a cross from the right.

It then got worse for Bays when Bresnahan got a second yellow card straight from the kick off and was dismissed.

A man down, Bays were now on the back foot and struggling to hold a rampant Bay Olympic. A flurry of cards for stupidity didn’t help either.

Coombes made it 4-1 with six minutes remaining and right on time Kitano got his second when he beat Ellensohn at the near post.

A poor performance.  Also a couple of suspensions for next week.

Team:  Ellensohn, Darkwa, Carpenter, Edginton, Wynne, Bresnahan, McKeown, Azame (Olla 82), Jones-Seekie, Escolme (Barnett 61), Del Monte (Buswell 68)

The Development Team also exited from their Knockout Cup with a 4-1 loss to Birkenhead United.
