The Premiers and Development team have finished their season.
Heroic goalkeeping from both custodians kept the score down as the rain fell incessantly throughout the game. However the Bays City Park pitch held up and the game was played in full unlike many others throughout the Auckland region who succumbed to the weather.
Bays gave away an early free kick and Dave Ellensohn reacted smartly to save Paul Urlovic’s shot. At the other end, Central keeper, Blaz Bugarin pulled off the first of many fine saves to deny Luiz Del Monte.
Eric Jones Seekie put Emmanuel Darkwa through down the right but a poor cross spoiled the move.
A Central break on the seventeenth minute saw Paul Rhodes one on one with Ellensohn, but the keeper pulled off a great save to deny what should have been the opening goal.
Bays swept back up the other end forcing a corner from which Kris Carpenter’s header was cleared off the line for another corner. The ball from Del Monte caused havoc in the Central goalmouth and Joe Bresnahan was able to scramble the ball home to give Bays the lead.
Central struck back with Stephen Carmichael forcing Ellensohn into another good save to deny him.
Just on the half hour, Bugarin was again in action, first saving from Mikael Munday, then defending an inswinging corner, before pulling off another fine save to deny a Del Monte free kick.
Escolme was blocked just before the break with Bays holding a 1-0 lead at half time.
It continued raining during the break and some surface water started to appear on the pitch as the skies grew darker but both teams put the conditions to one side as they continued to play football and deny each other opportunities to score.
Bugarin again showed his class by taking the ball off the foot of Dillon Barnett and a Jones Seekie shot was cleared off the line by Chris Bale.
The second goal came after 76 minutes when Barnett made a break down the left and crossed the ball to Jones Seekie who took time to control the ball and send Bugarin the wrong way before scoring at the near post.
Central refused to lie down and Ellensohn made another good save to deny Jordan Roberts.
As the clock wound down, substitute Nathan Buswell was denied by Bugarin and then shot wide from a Baptiste Azame cross while at the other end Ellensohn, kept a clean sheet with another fine stop.
Three valuable points propelling Bays up the table to third place.
Team: Ellensohn, Darkwa, Edginton, Carpenter, Wynne, Bresnahan, Munday (Azame 68), McKeown, Del Monte (Barnett 37), Jones Seekie (Buswell 83), Escolme.
Scorers: Bresnahan 20, Jones Seekie 76
The Development Team put on an improved performance but were no match for Central who lead 2-0 at half time. Elliot Dooley pulled one back early in the second half but a third goal to Central sewed up the game.
