The Premiers and Development team have finished their season.
East Coast Bays completed their season with a 2-1 win over relegated side Melville, the win ensuring them second place in the league for 2012.
A pitch with long grass and a peat base which made turning almost impossible ensured a scrappy affair especially in the first half as both sides gave the ball away a regular intervals and were woefully astray when in goalscoring position.
A long throw by Dan Peat in the early stages saw Joe Bresnahan attempt a bicycle kick but it was off target, Melville then wasted two good chances especially when the Bays defence got in a tangle and gave up the ball on the edge of the box. Good work by Emmanuel Darkwa, Scott Campbell and Peat was wasted by a poor shot on goal and from this Melville broke but their shot was wide.
Nathan Palmer broke away just past the half hour, cut inside and shot past the keeper only to see his shot hit the underside of the crossbar and bounce to safety but the ball was won back by Bays, passed to Peat who cut in from the right and shot. His strike was palmed away by the keeper but fell to Palmer who gleefully banged the ball into the net to give Bays the lead.
Melville had a good chance just before the break but the strike from Ryan Thomas was wide.
A good block by Bresnahan straight after the break denied Melville a quick equalizer, and Bays began to gradually dominate. Play see-sawed back and forth without either side threatening until just past the hour when Bresnahan won the ball.
A pass to Jason McKeown who passed to Kelly Escolme who flicked on to Dillon Barnett who went on a run against the Melville defence. As Barnett was being closed down he passed to Escolme who had been following him. Escolme had a shot that was blocked by the keeper but the ball rebounded to Escolme who made no mistake the second time, giving Bays a 2-0 lead.
Going into the final ten minutes, some good build up work saw another chance wasted to go further ahead. Into the last moments of stoppage time, Bays gave away a free kick just outside the box and Thomas curled a delightful shot over the wall and into the top corner of the net to giver Melville a consolation goal. A good win the see off the season.
