11th Grade Development Team at Papamoa

East Coast Bays (of Plenty)

ECB's 11th grade SYAB "development team", travelled to Papamoa along with 2 other ECB teams in the search for some much needed silverware for the club trophy cabinet.

On paper (thank goodness football is not played on paper!), this team had been placed in an extremely strong pool of teams. The first two pool games were forgettable, with the team failing to warm to their task (the sub zero temps may have played a part). One sound beating, followed by a close run thing, dominating in both possession and territory but failing to capitalise on either. The next two games were all Bays, playing good thinking football, with some clinical finishing, no scrappy goals here.

Next round saw ECB through to the plate semi final (beaten by one solitary point for the cup final play-offs). First up Papakura Arsenal, as always a formidable opponent, and worthy adversary's. After the end of full time a goalless draw. Competition rules said straight to Penalty Shoot Out (from past experience, not one of our strong points).A goal was selected, toss made, penalty takers chosen, the scene was set..Papkura had first attempt

(Foreshadowing)..high, wide and handsome..ECB's sharpshooters were on-song, slotting in five well (unstoppable) taken penalties to 3. On to the final.

The opposition was Otumoetai Phoenix, a team that we played in pool play.( one of the games we won). Bays again dominated the opening stanza of play and a well worked move from the back, involving great link play between defence and attack saw a nicely finished goal. Towards the end of the 1st half a momentary lapse saw Otumoetai, level the ledger.

The second half was more of the same with bays displaying an attractive flowing passing game, this was rewarded with a great end-to-end goal. The full time whistle was a welcome relief especially to the travelling fan club.

"Well done boys" and coaches, great time had by all…
