The Premiers and Development team have finished their season.
Had both sides been more accurate in their shooting and had either goalkeeper not been in such good form, the score could well have been higher, but in the end Bays prevailed thanks to a Joe Bresnahan header in the 18th minute. Both teams were up for a game of football and Waitakere welcomed back some of their franchise players so the game started at a fast clip. Nathan Palmer was put through by Bresnahan in the fourth minute but put his shot wide while at the other end, Denver MacDonald latched on to a wayward backpass only to see Mikael Munday clear his shot off the line. Aidan Gwilt, Bays custodian pulled off the first of several great saves to deny Rory Turner from right in front, while at the other end, Danny Robinson denied Dillon Barnett. The vital goal came when Waitakere faled to clear a Bays attack, the ball was crossed, nodded back across the goal to Bresnahan who headed in from close to the goal line. Waitakere were quick to come back, a free kick was blocked by the wall and Turner volleyed over. Some great interplay between Jason McKeown and Deklan Wynne took play right to the Waitakere goal but ther was no one to add the final touch. Brock Messenger made a great run down the flank, crossed to Palmer whose shot was blocked and from the resultant corner, Robinson plucked the ball from Palmer’s forehead before he could make contact. In the closing minutes of the half MacDonald was off target for Waitakere and Palmer fell foul of the offside law. From the kickoff for the second half, Palmer was put through but couldn’t get the ball past Robinson. However Waitakere were now forcing themselves back into contention and the Bays defence was living dangerously at times. Play swung back and forth between the teams with both sets of strikers failing to find the target. Bresnahan had another header cleared off the line just past the hour before Gwilt was in action to deny Jake Butler. It looked like Waitakere would have an equalizer in the 69th minute when turner let fly with a drive that seemed destined for the top corner of the net, but Gwilt somehow flung himself across the goal to tip the ball past the upright. Waitakere continued to press but were off target with their chances and in the final minutes of stoppage time, Barnett had two chances to make the game safe but was unsuccessful thanks to Robinson. A nail biting final period but Bays hung on to take the points. Team: Gwilt, Messenger, Munday, Beguely, Wynne, Bresnahan, McKeown, Scott Campbell (Grove 93), Peat (Halkyard 85), Barnett, Palmer (Darkwa 73) Scorers: Bresnahan 18
