10th Grade Start off season in style:

On Sunday the 22nd May, ( the day the world was meant to end).. East Coast Bays "Davis", attended the Papakura 10th Grade Tournament.

On a cool, clear and still morning, the first hiccup of the day occurred when we were advised that our goalkeeper had broken his hand in the last of our grading rounds, and he would be unable to play!

The grounds were firm underfoot if a little bumpy, covered in a heavy dew.

Pool play had ECB playing Hamilton North, a Fencibles Team and the Host club (Papakura). Despite the makeshift look about the team due to injuries, the boys did enough (just) to be top of the pool and through to the Semi finals of the Championship round, where we played Three Kings United 2. Bays played good passing football and finished this game the better by two goals, and on to the final against Papakura Arsenal  (Papakura's Academy Team).

This game was true finals football, tough and uncompromising. Half way through the first half Bays went into the lead with a beautifully constructed and clinically finished goal (a great header by Ewan).

The Bays supporters believed that we should have been awarded at least one penalty for a filthy tackle on one of our players in "the box" but it wasn't to be. Bays continued to dominate a team which persisted on playing dirty football with perceived impunity from the home officials. When the final hooter eventually went, East Coast Bays had won the Championship, 1 - 0.

Trophy Time ! but no.. a handshake and a badge, for all the boys hard work and great football.. that and the knowledge that they were the beast team out of the 16 who attended. Mention must also be made of Cory Massicks who won the Best attacking player award..!

Big thanks to George our stand in goal keeper, and to Ewan for scoring the winning goal. Thanks must also go to Michael, the coach, and the encouraging entourage of supporters.
