11th Grade ECB Snelgar win Northland Cup

We hired a van and headed for Whangarei on Friday afternoon. On Saturday morning we woke up to what turned out to be a miserable wet day. The tournament was going to be tough with Waitakere and rep sides from Whangarei, Northern Wairoa, Kaitaia, and Kerikeri in our group. The other group had strong teams too with Ellerslie, Greenhithe, and Forrest Hill in it. All through the day we were on equal points with Waitakere, but they had a 2 goal difference ahead of us. But with Logan, Marco, Ben, Josh v, and Ethan all getting on the score sheet we were still in it. Yosh, Hamish, and Ryan all worked hard in the midfield. Josh O, Jacob, Johnathon, and Jack with Callum in goal didn’t let the ball cross our goal line. So it came down to the last game, which we won 2-0 against Kerikeri. Kaitaia upset Waitakere 1-0, so we were through to the cup final against Forrest Hill Milford.

The weather got worse. It was now raining constantly and the wind was up. We had over an hour’s wait to play the final, with all the kids huddled under a gazebo with parents blocking the wind and rain from them with umbrellas.

The first half was pretty even, but half way through the 2nd half our boys started to tire. Forrest Hill sent wave after wave of attack, and it was only with sheer guts and two one-on-one saves from Callum our Goalie that we held them out.

The penalty shootout was it’s usual nerve wracking stuff. Callum jumped in the goal 1st. A hard shot towards the top left corner from FHM, which saw Callum block it. Logan sent the ball into the bottom right with ease. FHM 2nd shot was low and hard straight at Callum who blocked that one as well. So Callum now had saved all 7 penalties from 7 for the season. Next saw Josh v put the ball nicely into the side of the net. FHM put one in the top right hand corner off the crossbar. Ben stepped up and calmly slotted the ball into the bottom right corner. FHM sent one into the bottom left corner. So it was 3-2 to us, best of 5. If we got this penalty we would win the cup. Callum our keeper was chosen to take it. The FHM boys know him now and called out, “watch it he will kick it really hard”. Callum took a huge 10m run-up, and WHACK. It was like a missile straight over the keeper’s head. The keeper got a hand to it, but there was never going to be any other outcome. GOAL. We won. Needless to say that night, and the ride home on Sunday with a stop at Waiwera was a pleasurable one. We arrived at the club with Queen’s “We are the champions” blasting out of the van to a huge applause from the parents. What a great end to the season for the 2nd team. Well done boys.
