We are today pleased to announce that Willy Gerdsen, the East Coast Bays Premier Team Coach and overall club Director of Coaching, has been appointed as the Head Coach of Waikato FC in the New Zealand Football Championship (NZFC). This follows a thorough interview and appointment process undertaken by Waikato FC, with support from Waikato BoP Football, and as a result of this Willy has signed a 2 year contract with the franchise.
In his position Willy will be supported by an assistant coach and we are also pleased to announce that Rod Grove, his assistant at East Coast Bays, has accepted this role alongside Willy. The Waikato FC coaching team will be completed with the appointment, by Willy, of a Waikato based technical advisor.
The NZFC season operates from October through until April and, as such, will ensure that both Willy and Rod can continue in their current roles at the Bays with minimal disruption to the planning and pre season operations of the Bays.
The club are fully supportive of these appointments and view them as a reflection of the many years of success that Willy, and latterly Rod, have had in developing East Coast Bays into one of the foremost winter clubs in the country not just at premier team level, but also through the junior teams and individual player developments. Amongst their notable successes over the years with Bays has been Chatham Cup Winners 2008, National U19 Napier Tournament Champions 2004 and 2009, US1 Premiership Champions 2008, 2009, New Zealand MUPC Champions 2010 (Nike Cup U15’s) and Willy’s initial triumph with East Coast Bays as NFSL Division 1 Champions 2003.
We wish Willy and Rod every success during their tenure at Waikato FC, and to continuing their successful work with East Coast Bays both in the remainder of this current season and in the years to come.
