A frosty start to a sunny day that saw the East Coast Bays Cheetahs enter their 3rd tournament of the year at McFetridge Park, Glenfield.
It was a slow start against North Shore but a 4-0 win gave the lads a much needed goal difference in the bank leading up to the big pool clash against Birkenhead A.
Both teams needed the win to guarantee them into the championship final. However it was 0-0 at half time, and that’s the way it stayed. Our 7th grade boys had plenty of chances but they just weren’t used to slotting the ball into 2x1 meter sized goals.
Onto the last pool game against Ranui Swanson, we needed to win and better our goal difference to have a chance of playing the championship round. Thankfully our goal scoring machine Brandon Stewart was in form and was also well supported by Danny Malik who slotted a beauty from a corner kick. The 3-0 win saw us off to play the Mighty Glenfield Rovers in the semi final.
While Manager Mike McCarthy covered up his Glenfield Rovers shirt, the hosts showed tough resolve with a solid defensive game, which was again cancelled out buy our defender Matthew Skilton. But this Semi Final was all about Harrison Dietrich, playing himself back into form and playing the Cheetahs into the Semi’s with two nuggety goals.
Into the finals against old foes Fencibles. The last time these two met was at Birkenhead 2009 where East Coast Bays won in the finals on penalties.
The Fencibles, seeking revenge, drew first blood. But when Stephanos Georgiou came off injured it was always going to be an uphill battle. Nate Rolfe-Vyson gave us hope with a well deserved goal (his 2nd of the day).
3-1 and our midfielders Carlos McMurdo and Luke Allport ran their legs off while the entire team pushed on and ignored the score line.
The boys played with guts, determination and a spirit that motivated them to play hard into the dying seconds. It was this x-factor of these proud East Coast Bays soldiers that made us all, both parents and coach Ross Georgiou most very proud.
