The Premiers and Development team have finished their season.
The rain stayed away and Clendon AFC turned on a stunning day for football with 18 teams turning up to contest the first tournament of 2010 at Mountford Park, Manurewa.
After pool play (two wins and a 0-0 draw), our boys were into the quarter finals against Forrest Hill. This was a tough game but the boys dug deep and pulled off a thrilling 1-0 win in extra time.
The semi-final against Waitakere saw the lads step up a notch, playing with spirit and working their combinations with confidence. A 2-0 victory put them in the right frame of mind for the finals.
On to the Championship final against unbeaten Eastern Suburbs. Suburbs defended well but managed only one shot on goal while we had many. Scoreless in normal time and extra time it went to a penalty shootout (and a few more grey hairs for the parents).
Coach Ross Georgiou chose 5 kickers and used two keepers. We missed, they missed and then our keeper saved one! The last penalty kick went our way and so did the title of Clendon tournament Champions.
The team not only left with a huge trophy, but had the strongest defence, no conceding any goals in the six games played. Matthew Skilton was the rock of the defence.
Special thanks to Coach Ross Georgiou who has now taken the boys to three tournaments with two wins and a second place.
