The Premiers and Development team have finished their season.
Twice coming from behind, the Under 17 Metropolitan League
team defeated Waitakere City 4-2 to claim the title and finish the season
For such an important game, it was poor that the Federation
couldn’t provide an official referee and after some delay the game started with
a parent officiating. A controversial decision to award a free kick for an
alleged back pass led to Waitakere taking the lead much to the dismay of the Bays
Bays hit back to level the scores with a bullet from Matt Du
Toit but Waitakere regained the lead with a goal that was clearly offside.
Tempers were becoming frayed at the break and the match was
saved from degenerating when official referee Mike Kaveney, down to control the
Reserves game following, offered to do the second half. His presence and
authority kept both teams in check.
Another Du Toit goal levelled the score as Bays pressed,
encouraged by a large group of supporters. Du Toit was on hand to take
advantage of a knock down by Zane Olla to notch his hat trick and give Bays the
lead while Joss Vosslander wrapped up the game with a fourth goal late in the
The team was well captained by Sam Barnfield who ran
midfield with Tom Davis and Jono Crezee-Tetteroo while Alec Solomon and Julian Halkyard were outstanding in defence.
Wesley Baldwin toiled hard up front and was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet.
A great season for the team who were unbeaten with many
still in action as part of the Under 19 team that will go to Napier in October.
