Match report - Round 7 - 08 June 2013 - Tigers v Pine River Swans

This weekend saw the boys playing away to the Pine Rivers Swans and it was undoubtedly their toughest game to date.

Under the captaincy of Mitchell (and down a player), the boys put up a good fight to a very strong Swans side.

Isaac KL had a brilliant game - running, kicking, passing non-stop in every quarter - and was the deserved recipient of this week's Best on Field award. His brother Josh applied great defence skills and received the Most Improved award.

Cooper was in on the action at every opportunity and scored the Best Team player award. Ben, Sam and Will had a great game in the forwards, all scoring goals; Rudy, Matt & Mitchell were persistent in their defence; Isaac K was fearless in the centre and James took the mark of the season to date....on the full-time hooter.

The boys will be focussing on their running and passing at upcoming training sessions.

Match report - Round 6 - 01 June 2013 - Tigers v Aspley Gold

"Under the captaincy of Matthew, the boys played a very competitive game against Aspley Gold, despite being down two players.

The team work skills the boys have been practising at Thursday night training have been put into play and it is really showing dividends.

Rudy and Mitchell have been with the team for four weeks now (having joined us from the U8s) and are a great addition.  Their tenacity against the older players has to be seen to be believed!

All boys are performing well across the rotated positions - this week saw Matthew, Ben & Mitchell defending and kicking well in the back; James, Josh, Sam and Isaac K took control of the centre and did some great hand and kick passing to their team mates; and once the ball was in the forwards, Cooper, Darcy and Isaac KL took every opportunity to convert the possession into points.

This weeks Players of the Match were Isaac K and Darcy.

Match report - Round 3 - 04 May 2013 - Tigers v Sandgate Red

Week 3 saw the Mayne Tigers U9s play at home against a very competitive Sandgate Red team.

Special thanks to Sandgate Red for lending us two players - Ashlee and Bella - which allowed us to play 12 a side for the whole match.  Also thanks to Mitchell who played up from the Mayne Tigers U8s team.

Our boys are starting to put into action the skills and tips they have been learning at Thursday night training - big thanks to coaches Jason and Clint for putting their hands up to help out this year.

The first quarter was very tight - we saw some great kicking in the backs by James and Josh and a good battle in the mid-field by Will which kept the opposition goal-less. The second quarter demonstrated good team work all round with some great passing by Matthew and Sam in the centre & kicking by forward Cooper.

In the third quarter, Mitchell showed his versatility and this week's captain, Darcy, controlled the mid-field.

It was a warm Saturday morning and despite the heat starting to take its toll on the boys in the fourth quarter, they held in there and finished strongly thanks to some great mid-field work by Isaac K-L.  Congratulations to this week's Players of the Match - James and Isaac K-L.

The boys appreciated the sideline support from team mate Ben and are looking forward to him being back on the field by the end of the month.

Match report - Round 2 - 28 April 2013 - Tigers v Swans (Pine Rivers)

For our first 'away' game for season 2013, the Mayne Tigers U9 travelled to Pine Rivers to play the Swans.

With James away this week and Ben having come off second best in a contest with a trampoline during the week (resulting in a broken arm), we were grateful to the Swans for lending us two players each quarter - and even a third player for the last quarter when Will had to head off early.

There has been a noticeable increase in the speed at which the game is played in the U9s, which the boys are adapting well to. The introduction of tackling at the U9 level has also been a change for the boys - with most taking to the closer contact with enthusiasm once they got over the initial surprise at being grabbed by the jersey!

Our U8 'veterans' from last year, Cooper, Isaac K-L, Joshua (this week's captain), Matthew and Will, have been joined by Darcy, Isaac Kirby and Sam, and already the boys are looking like being a very capable and effective team unit again in 2013. It's good to see the boys' skills increasing further even after only a couple of training sessions, with some outstanding kicking and handballing on show.

A special mention goes to Ben and his dad Peter for turning out to support the team despite Ben not being able to play for the next few weeks - we look forward to seeing him back on the paddock as soon as possible.

Darcy and Cooper were awarded players of the match this round, but faced stiff competition this week with all the Tigers putting in a solid performance against a determined Swans outfit.
