For our first 'away' game for season 2013, the Mayne Tigers U9 travelled to Pine Rivers to play the Swans.
With James away this week and Ben having come off second best in a contest with a trampoline during the week (resulting in a broken arm), we were grateful to the Swans for lending us two players each quarter - and even a third player for the last quarter when Will had to head off early.
There has been a noticeable increase in the speed at which the game is played in the U9s, which the boys are adapting well to. The introduction of tackling at the U9 level has also been a change for the boys - with most taking to the closer contact with enthusiasm once they got over the initial surprise at being grabbed by the jersey!
Our U8 'veterans' from last year, Cooper, Isaac K-L, Joshua (this week's captain), Matthew and Will, have been joined by Darcy, Isaac Kirby and Sam, and already the boys are looking like being a very capable and effective team unit again in 2013. It's good to see the boys' skills increasing further even after only a couple of training sessions, with some outstanding kicking and handballing on show.
A special mention goes to Ben and his dad Peter for turning out to support the team despite Ben not being able to play for the next few weeks - we look forward to seeing him back on the paddock as soon as possible.
Darcy and Cooper were awarded players of the match this round, but faced stiff competition this week with all the Tigers putting in a solid performance against a determined Swans outfit.
