Why the Darwin?
Charles Darwin was the most famous of the nineteenth century English scientists after whom many of the West Coast mountains including, Mount Lyell, Mount Huxley and Mount Owen were named.
His theory of evolution is often called "the survival of the fittest", so perhaps it's an appropriate football name. Darwin was the name chosen for the electorate which stretched from Devonport to Strahan. The much-reduced area is now called Braddon. The name was often used (eg - the Darwin Hospital in Alexander Street, Burnie), so it was a logical choice for an association formed in 1938.
The founders of the new Darwin Football Association in 1951 probably didn't even consider any other alternatives. Since then, there have been suggestions that the name be changed to reflect modern situations and to avoid confusion. The moves have been rejected by club delegates, partly, no doubt, because there is no other obvious alternative name for the area which once stretched from Natone to Myalla and now covers Ulverstone to Queenstown to Myalla. But rejected mainly because of the pride and tradition associated with the name.
