SENIORS
The Hills were back at home on the weekend after a couple of road trips, and with the amount of rain we had during the week the ground was always going to be a bit heavy. And so it was. South Morang were sitting on the top of the ladder and the Hills were just sitting inside the four, so both sides were looking to consolidate their positions.
The first quarter started well for the Hills with the boys going in hard and being first for the ball. This resulted in the Hills being able to hit the scoreboard regularly and kicked 4 goals for the term. South Morang were able to kick 3 of their own, but in heavy conditions the hills were happy to take a 1 goal advantage into the first change. The game became a bit of a scrap in the second term with plenty of stoppages around the ground. Tristan Kreymborg was marking everything all over the ground and James Dodd's in his first game in the seniors this year was working hard to keep the backline together. South Morang were able to take a 3 point lead at half time.
The 3rd wasn't a good one for the Hills, South Morang started to get a little bit of their running game going, and were able to open up the Hills with their switching and spread across the outer wing. The hills battled hard but were not able to kick any goals for the term and South Morang had opened up a 14 point break at 3/4 time. The hills needed a lift in the last quarter as you could see the game slowly starting to slip away. They started well and kicked the first goal of the last quarter and signs seemed good.
RESERVES
Last Saturday the Reserves again proved that they’re going to be hard to beat in 2011. In what wasn’t one of the Redback Reserves greatest games to date the reserves dug deep when it mattered to run out 6 goal winners in tough conditions against another top four side. The heavy ground wasn’t the desired conditions for our talls and especially when South Morang played some smaller type players it took a while for our boys to adjust to both conditions and matchups but once they did they broke away from the opposition on the scoreboard. Daniel Keen who finished with four goals was sensational and was well supported the ever reliable Clint Anderson, Craig Huggins and Dave Brown up forward. Adam Anderson played another great game in the midfield and across half back and was judged BOG. It was another strong win for the 2s so they now need to make sure they continue to work hard as a team and improve on weaknesses. Snappy is now recovering from his operation and he’ll be back on the track soon? Go Hillers!
The game went up a level and players from both sides were once again throwing everything they had into the contest. But South Morang were able to steady and ended up outscoring the Hills again for the quarter and ran out 24 point winners. To the Hills credit they battled hard all day, and with another two players going down before half time to take no further part in the game, it was a gallant effort. Tristan Kremyborg was again good all day, Will Box playing in the middle was very solid James Gilliland also worked hard off half back and Ricky Woods tried hard all day. The boys travel to Heidelberg West next week, and they are always a hard team to get over at their home ground, the boys I'm sure will be on their game and chasing a victory. Go Hills!!
