It was a match of two halves at Turner Road on Saturday. It was all the Demons in the first half with a tight defence, hard running midfield and dangerous forward line led by Clint Brooks and Matt Thompson. We looked far more dangerous and there was no indication of what was to come.
The rain arrived and our desire departed. What unfolded was both uncharacteristic and unacceptable. A 25 point lead was converted into a 17 point deficit at half time as the hosts piled on 10 goals in the quarter. Our midfield lost all accountability, our backline played a metre behind and our forwards could not keep the ball in. Full credit to Highett but to allow ten goals in a term was good enough and selfishness crept into our game.
Three quarter time gave us respite from the onslaught, and remarkably we were still in the game. We created some chances in the final term but were not good enough to convert them. The boys were extremely disappointed after the game as a team whose trademark has been work ethic knew that they had let themselves down. Highett were more prepared that we were to put their noses over the football when things got tough, and that must hurt.
Matt Thompson battled admirably to finish with three goals. Crackers and Danny were good contributors along with Brodie Snow. Unfortunately even our better players had to share responsibility for the third quarter carnage.
The reserves had a good win after a tight struggle. Great to see Damian Stoter – Rainer back and amongst the best along with Kris Thompson. Adam Nichols also returned from injury whilst Jamie Fox and Amar were also among the best.
