What an amazing day for the Bears with two ripping wins over local-rivals Murrumbeena at Beena Arena.
The reserves put in their best performance in years to down the highly-fancied Beena – our second consecutive victory. The win was the perfect way to celebrate the milestones of club legends Matthew Costantino (200 games) and Shane Campbell (100 games). Both Connie and Shambles were solid contributors on their big day, a game also highlighted by the stunning debut of Todd Wallace.
It was a hotly contested game all arvo, but the boys fought hard to win the contested footy, ran hard and played for each other, completely epitomising what Bears Footy is all about. Anthony O’Shea was best on in the 20-point win after a superb performance in the back half. Tommy Siegert and Josh Dart starred in the middle and John Hunter was a live-wire up forward with four goals.
The seniors worked just as hard as the reserves did, and their reward was a stirring 26-point win. It was a tough contest in the first half, but the Bears gained the ascendancy in the premiership quarter booting five goals to take a handy lead into the last change. Beena surged with the wind in the final term, but the backline led by Chris Dove and Will Lucardie proved impenetrable. Adam Connell was the difference with five goals while Mason Angove, Jason Gorman and young Sean Gunning were also standouts.
Magnificent work, boys. Couldn’t be prouder of your efforts and it just goes to show how far we have come as a club.
A reminder to get your best clobber out of the wardrobe as our next club function is the Bears Cocktail Night. It will be held at the London Tavern on Saturday July 12th and it’s sure to be another cracking do. Further details to follow next week so stay tuned...
