Diggers Rest maintained its place on top of the Riddell District Football League ladder with a vital win against Rupertswood at the weekend.

Despite playing away from home, the Burras settled the quicker of the two sides early and kicked the only three goals of the opening term to hold an 18-point lead at the first break.

While Rupertswood was able to hit the scoreboard at the resumption of play, it didn’t take long for the Burras to kick away again.

Five goals to three in the third term increased the margin to 32 points and all but sealed the win for the visitors.

Diggers Rest had nine individual goalkickers in the 13.9 (87)-7.10 (52) victory, Luke Smailes leading the way with three.

Taylor Hine was again among the best for the Burras.

Since signing in the off season, Hine has been named in his side’s best players in four of his five matches. He has also kicked four goals.

Tom Evans and Michael Evans were also impressive for the Burras.

After five rounds of the RDFL season, Diggers Rest and Macedon have separated themselves from the chasing pack.

Both have won all five, but the Burras hold top spot by just .65 per cent.

Lancefield, Riddell, Wallan and the Sunbury Kangaroos are all on three wins.
