The Inverell Saints have recorded a convincing 62 point victory over an understrength Tamworth Kangaroos. The match was billed as one of the most important of the season, with the winner all but assuring themselves top spot and a home semi. With the Saints receiving word of a forfeit this weekend, it means the Roos will need a miracle to snatch back top spot on percentage.
The match started at a fierce pace, and with the aid of the breeze, the Roos took the early ascendacy. Although missing several key forwards, they looked dangerous going into their 50 and had the Saints on the ropes early. The Saints responded with style but could only draw level at quarter time.
The second started much the same way with the Roos kicking the first of the quarter to take the lead. From that point it was all the Saints, piling on the next 5 to take a big lead into the long break. It could have been an even bigger break had the Saints put their kicking boots on, missing several gettable chances. Stewart Walker was starting to dominate across half forward and the work of Fraser Hughes and Darren Pithers in the midfield was also impressive.
The third quarter saw the Saints into the breeze again, and despite kicking the first two of the quarter, could not bury the persistent Roos. The third also saw some undisciplined play by the Saints, giving away several 50 penalties. It is an area the Saints will need to improve on before the finals.
The final quarter was all one way traffic, with the Saints running away with the match. Once again the Saints defense was outstanding, limiting the opposition to less than one goal in the quarter for the 10th time this season. Sam Kimmince lead the defensive line with distinction and was aptly supported by Matt Harrison and Peter Dunlop.
It was a clinical display by the Saints who know the next time these teams meet it won't be quite so easy. There are plenty of areas which need improvement, and with a couple of weeks off to recover from injuries, the Saints will be rearing to go in the Major Semi on August 23rd. With Bruce Wall to return to the team and Joe Kimmince a chance to return from injury, it will be a full strength outfit to take Varley Oval when these teams meet next.
