League Women Round 6 make-up game – Lightning v Eagles

The Eagles staged a mighty come-back in the last quarter to slip past the Lightning 61-59. The Lightning had the game well in hand at the start of the last quarter, leading by 14 points thanks to the effort of US import Kymira Woodberry. Woodberry had just return to action after injuring her hand a few weeks ago. Woodberry’s on court presence lifted the Lightning as they attempted to win for only the third time this season, but the Eagles dug deep and scrambled back to pip them at the post. Eagle guard Michelle Friel took the ball to the hoop every chance she got in the last quarter and the Lightning defense was left wanting, seemingly a step behind Friel and team mate Lillian Williams each time they drove. Leading 43-29 at the end of three quarters of play the Lightning looked well and truly home and hosed, but the Eagles launched their assault with Friel at the point and powered home to win the contest. The Birds outscored the Lightning 32-16 in the last quarter with Friel hitting 15 of her game high 25 points. Williams finished up with 10 for the Eagles while Woodberry top scored for the Lightning with 19.
