Round Ninteen- Challenge Season

League Women –Tracy Village Jets v Ansett

Tracy Village Jets won a thrilling 56-54 nail biter against Ansett to secure second place on the ladder,      giving the Bombers a double chance in playoffs beginning in two weeks time. The Jets looked to be rolling along quite comfortably after flying out to a 20-8 first quarter lead as Georgie Howlett (19) and Dem Cubillo (10) took control of the offence. The half time score of 29-17 indicated that the Bombers should win easily, but the Blues got on a roll in the third quarter thanks to a big team effort, out scoring the Jets 22-15 to be only 5 points adrift 44-39 heading into the last quarter. Within 3 minutes the Blues were ahead on the scoreboard and they held the lead until the last minute when Howlett and then Shannyn Ah Sam (11) potted the go ahead baskets that got the Jets over the line. Lauren Flanegan led the Blues from the front with 13 with backup from Olivia Birkett & Kia Bond (11 each) and Jennifer Kinsella with 10.

Round Twenty-Challenge Season

League MEN –Uni Rebels v Eagles

The Uni Rebels and Eagles played out a hard fought game that may have been a preview of a possible Preliminary Final matchup. The Rebels won the game 89-80, but had to work hard for victory. The win was the fifth in a row since loosing to the Jets back in round 14 and the teams square off in next weeks last round in what could be a Grand Final preview. The combined scoring of Aaron Richie & Andre’ Moss (63 points) was just enough to outpoint Eagle gunners Buster Perkins & Louis Ilton (back from university in the USA) who each hit 25 for the game. The Rebels had built a 5 point buffer at the half way mark 50-45 and it stayed that way until the final quarter when they got on a 21-17 run that put the game away for good. Richie finished with 32pts, Moss with 31 and Jarrod Sheppard added 16. Nineteen three pointers were shared between the teams.

League Men – Razzle v Ansett

Matt Hunt paved the way for a lopsided 131-56 Ansett win over rivals Razzle. Hunt led the Blues for the second consecutive game with scoring honours, hitting a game high 34, as Ansett overpowered the undermanned green and gold. It was going to be a long night for Razzle as only five players fronted for their last game of the season. Ansett enjoyed the ‘tune up‘ for the playoffs with six players hitting double figures. Jake Feeney hit a season high 27 for the Blues, his best outing for some time and Cameron McKenzie added 17. For the Razzle it was Ross Vasic who led the team with 29 (including 7 treys).

League Men – Warriors v Lightning

Lightning won their sixth game of the competition, a 86-55 victory against the Warriors. The win gives the Lightning a bit more respectability after such a poor start to the season. Tony Halikos (photo above) hit a season and game high 20 with four other players in double figures for Lightning. Jesse Bell also hit his season high of 19 in support with Dean Peachy (16), Chris Charman (14) and Brodie Hertel (11) also adding to the score line. Lightning was in control of the game from the start, leading 25-9 after one quarter and holding a handy 54-17 half time lead before taking the foot off the pedal. Warriors put up more resistance in the second half, out scoring Lightning 39-32, but the damage was already done. Christian Williams led the Warriors with 11 and Justin Costello dropped in 10.

Ladder:       Tracy Village Jets 16-1-0, Uni Rebels & Ansett 10-2-5, Eagles 8-2-7, Lightning 5-1-11, Warriors 3-2-12, Razzle & 2-2-14

Next Week:                       Lightning v Eagles 6:15pm, Warriors v Ansett 7:45pm, Uni Rebels v Tracy Village Jets 9:15pm, Razzle-Bye
