DBA League Results – 26 & 27 October 2017

Round 17

League Women - Palmerston Power v Razzle Storm (Thursday)

The Razzle Storm kept their slim chances of a playoff spot alive with a close 52-48 win against a tenacious Palmerston Power outfit. The Storm led from the start, but put up points whenever the Power threatened to pinch the lead from them. Sue Bastick hit a bucket with 4:25 left in the game to get the Power within five points and Christine West followed that up with a basket at 3:11 left to get the Power within three points at 46-43, but that was as close as they got. Lailani Triffitt & Erin Boyd hit consecutive baskets to push the Storm’s lead back out to seven points at 50-43 with just 1:35 remaining to keep the Storm in the running for end of season playoffs. Triffitt (13.1ppg) finished up with a game high 20 with Boyd (16.3ppg) on 13. Brittany Ward (18ppg) led the Power with 12 and Louise Turner had 9.

Ansett v Uni Rebels (Friday)

Ansett blew past the Uni Rebels 85-43 to take a firm grip on the double chance position of second place on the ladder. The Rebels didn’t get the chance to celebrate Chantelle Lee’s 600th League game with a win, but celebrated nonetheless. Dedication has been evident over Lee’s career of 20+ years since hitting the court in 1995. However, the Blues wrecked the party with a solid team game led by Tal Yakov (26.8ppg) and Tamiyah Perkins (10ppg) who combined for 47 points. The Blues had run up a half time score of 47-20 so the writing was on the wall. Yakov finished with a game high 25, Perkins 22, Ruta Valiulyte added 12 and Amelia Short 10. Danielle Ponter (13.6ppg) led the Rebels with 11 and Shavayah Lee (10.5ppg) had 10. For the record Chantelle has averaged 4.4ppg during her career.

Eagles v Tracy Village Jets (Friday)

The League leading Tracy Village Jets thumped the Eagles 80-45 for their 13th win of the season. A stiff defensive effort by the Jets kept Eagle top scorers Ieasha Friel (20ppg) and Jaylene Boundry (12) well under their normal output which was the main reason for the 35 point win. The Jets hit the court full of run and posted a 18-4 tally to start the game followed by a 25-11 run in the second quarter to put them up by 28 at the half. Erin Geer (14.4ppg) hit a game high 18, Tikesa Docherty-Cole 12 @ 17.7ppg and Kylie Duggan & Leah Seden 10 each. Only Tulaha Jeffrey (14ppg) could manage double figures for the Eagles with 14.

Ladder:                   Tracy Village Jets 13-2, Ansett 12-3, Eagles 10-5, Palmerston Power 5-9, Lightning 5-9, Razzle Storm 4-10 & Uni Rebels 2-13

Men

Round 17

League Men – Essington Cannons v Lightning (Thursday)

The Essington Cannons used all their firepower to run riot over the Lightning 137-64. The intention was made obvious in the first quarter as the Cannons boomed out 34 points to just 9 for the Lightning. Travis Ellis (20.8ppg) led the charge hitting 16 of his game high 32 in the quarter as the Cannons rolled onward to victory. Deba George (23ppg) added to the score line with 27, Fisto Bizima 24, Deola D’Brown Folarin 19 and Tobiasz Hose 18. The Cannons didn’t give the Lightning much chance to get anything going despite 23 points from Jesse Bell (21.4ppg) and 17 from Dylan De Santis (7.5ppg including 5 treys). The loss by the Lightning has dropped them out of contention for the final four.

Razzle Storm v Palmerston Power (Thursday)

Palmerston Power were pushed to the limit against the Razzle Storm, but won out in the end 81-75. A big game by Garrett Hall (25.5ppg) netted him a game high 33 and with support from Ben Streeter (18) and Willie Shackleford (12) the Power prevailed. They had to hold off a late rally by the Storm to win as Fred Williams (28.2ppg) and James Rudolph (9.8ppg) kept the pressure on until the final whistle. The Power led at every turn, but the Storm put in a concerted effort in the last quarter to outscore the Power 23-15 to just fall short. Williams led the Storm with 29, Rudolph finished with 20 and Chris Mahlstedt added 16.

Tracy Village Jets v Eagles (Friday)

Anthony Golden (33.6ppg) set a new three-point record hitting 14 treys to bypass the old record of 13 set by Fisto Bizima in last year’s Championship Season. In the process Golden led the Eagles to an easy 113-76 victory over the Tracy Village Jets. Golden also broke the record for most treys in a season as he now has 90 with at least six more games to play. The old record was 86 set by Jarrod Sheppard of the Rebels back in the Challenge Season 2010. Golden’s first four baskets were all treys in the first quarter as the Eagles raced out to a commanding 32-14 lead. By half time it was 60-36 and the Eagles were flying away. Golden finished up with a season high 49 points with Joseph Johnson (18.3ppg) adding 17, Steven Sing & James Smith 12 each and Keven Woolley 11. The Jets had four in double figures with Joel Stevens (13.1ppg) leading the way with 17, Jake Geer 14 and Dante Ah Sam & Liam Maclachlan 13 apiece. The Eagles also set a new DBA team record of 22 treys in a game.

Ansett v Uni Rebels (Friday)

The Uni Rebels held off a late challenge from Ansett to better their rivals 97-90. The win puts a bit of a dent in Ansett’s efforts to make it into the final four. With only 4 games remaining in the regular season they have their work cut out for them and will probably have to rely on results from other games to make it. The Rebels steadily built up a comfortable buffer behind Spencer Coleman (28.6ppg) and Tim Morris (28.2ppg) and by three quarter time the Rebels were up 79-63. The Blues put in a late challenge to win the fourth quarter 27-18, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Rebels lead. Coleman top scored for the Rebels with 37, Morris had 25 and Marcus Ch’ng & Jake Kirby hit 14 each. Jerron Jamerson (37.2ppg) from the Blues led all scorers with 38, Mitch O’Donoghue had 22 and Robert Skinner 14.

Ladder:                   Uni Rebels 15-2, Essington Cannons & Eagles 12-5, Palmerston Power 11-6, Ansett 9-8, Lightning 5-11, Razzle Storm 2-14 & Tracy Village Jets 1-16
