Round 16

League Women -  Tracy Village Jets v Ansett

The Minor Premier Tracy Village Jets wrapped up the regular season with a polished 84-52 effort against Ansett on Thursday night. The first half was close with the Blues just staying in touch with the Bombers, but after the break the Jets went up another level and flew away from the Blues with ease. Tikesa Docherty-Cole (15.7ppg) led a group of four double digit scorers with 21 as the Bombers finished the season with a 14 win and 1 loss record. The Blues trailed by only 7 at half time 37-30 but after the break they were outscored 47-22. Docherty-Cole had support from Erin Geer (12.3ppg) with 15, and 11 apiece from Tahnee Maxwell & Tyla Cubillo. The Blues were led by Carolyn Nyhouse (16.1ppg) with 15, Ruta Valiulyte 14 and Tamiyah Perkins with 10.

Lightning v Eagles

The Eagles had to work hard to overcome a Lightning team bent on winning its first game of the season. The Birds won the match 64-63, but they had to fight back from a 13 point deficit as the Lightning built up a 33-20 half time lead behind the strong play from Dominique Carbone & Rebecca Thorne (6 treys for the game). Thorne hit a trey to start the third quarter giving the Lightning a 16 point lead, but the Birds methodically worked their way back into the game through Michelle Friel and Alysha-Marie Williams to trail by only 4 at 45-41 with a quarter to go. The Eagles finally caught up at 52 all with almost 6 minutes remaining and from that point onward it was basket for basket. It wasn’t until the 2 minute mark when Ieasha Friel hit a trey that the Birds went up 63-58. Carbone replied with a trey for the Lightning with 57 seconds left and followed that with a free throw (20 seconds left) to get the Lightning within 1 point at 63-62, but Friel hit a freebie with 17 seconds left to seal the game. Michelle Friel led the Birds with 18, Alysha-Marie Williams 14, Ieasha Friel 13 and Lillian Williams 10. Carbone led all scorers with a game and season high 24 and Thorne had 18.

Uni Rebels v Razzle Storm

Jasmyn Hewett & Jaylene Bonson teamed up for 42 points to lead the Uni Rebels to a 62-47 victory against the Razzle Storm. The two sides will meet up again next week Friday in the first round of semi-finals. Hewett (13ppg) & Bonson (15.6ppg) steered the Rebels to a first half 30-16 advantage and despite a third quarter revival by the Storm the Rebels kept their sights firmly on the end game. A bright spot for the Storm is that they have made the playoffs for the first time since 2006 and will be hoping to progress past the first round. Hewett & Bonson had 21 points apiece for the Rebels while Jo Farmer hit 14 and Erin Boyd 12 @ 13.6ppg for the Storm.

Eagles v Lightning (Rd 15 rescheduled game)

Celebrations all round in the Lightning camp as they finally won a game. They edged out the Eagles 78-74 in a game as exciting as the day before when they lost to the Birds by two 64-62! The game was a real reversal of the match played on Thursday only in this one the Eagles took the lead with some sharpshooting in the first half. They led 37-24, but were put on the back foot in the third quarter as the Lightning launched their attack behind Dominique Carbone (15.5ppg) and Rebecca Thorne. Thorne (9.8ppg) was on fire from outside the arc, she hit 5 of her 7 treys in the quarter to bring the Lightning within 4 points at 56-60 with a quarter to go. By the time the clock had run down to 7:07 remaining the Lightning had shot to the front after a couple of baskets by Carbone. Lightning were in front 63-60. They stayed ahead despite a late frenzy from the Eagles as Michelle Friel (12.2ppg) hit 7 points in the last 3 minutes to get the Birds within 3 at 77-74 with just 37 seconds to go. Fortunately for the Lightning the Eagles failed to get off any shots and Kira Pendlebury dropped in one free throw with 20 seconds left for the final scoreline. Carbone backed up her 24pt game on Thursday with another one in this game, Thorne had 23 (a season high) and Ashlee Walsh hit 14. Ieasha Friel (26.9ppg) led the Eagles with a game high 26, Alysha-Marie Williams 18, Michelle Friel 15 and Lillian Williams 11.
