Round 2

League Women Lightning v Uni Rebels

The Uni Rebels slipped past the stubborn Lightning 57-51 in a hard fought tussle for their first win of the competiton. The return to action by Rebel Jaylene Bonson is making a world of difference as she works to get herself into match fitness after a two year layoff. Apart from a few games last season Bonson hasn’t played a whole season since the Challenge Season in 2014. She hasn’t lost her shooting touch though, hitting 22 points to lead all scorers. Bonson had help from Tiayana Sing who also hit double figures with 12. The game was very tight with the Rebels making a significant break in the second quarter that proved to be the winning margin. The Rebels outscored the Lightning 14-7 in that stanza to lead 28-21 at half time and the rest of the game was played almost even. Rebecca Thorne & Kira Pendlebury shared honours for the Lightning with 11 each and Samantha Wilson added 10.

Eagles v Ansett

Trish Graham lit up the score board with nothing but treys as she racked up 10 of them for 30pts to lead the Eagles to an overwhelming 98-44 victory over Ansett. The Birds were on fire early as they shot out to a 30-16 first quarter lead followed up with a 24-6 second quarter run for a 54-22 half time lead. It was much the same in the second half as the Birds kept firing away. Graham got support from Ieasha Friel who dropped in 26, Sam Sanders 16 and Faye Armstrong 10. Tamiyah Perkins was the lone Blue to hit double figures with 15.

Tracy Village Jets v Razzle Storm

Consistancy throughout the game proved to be a winner for the Tracy Village Jets as they breezed to their 37th straight victory, this time against the Razzle Storm whom they beat 69-53. The Bombers set up the win in the first half, leading 34-18 and never really looking threatened. Tikesa Docherty-Cole led all scorers with 24 for the Jets with Leah Seden adding 15, Kylie Duggan 14 and Tania Dhu 13. Lailani Triffitt led the Storm with 23 with Rebecca Murray getting 14.

League Men Tracy Village Jets v HPP

A last quarter surge by the Tracy Village Jets proved to be a winner as the Jets held off the HPP outfit 99-83. HPP trailed by 5 at 65-60 going into the last quarter, but the Jets dug deep and lifted enough to claim the win. Jackson Tremlett & Tim Friend led the last quarter charge scoring half the 34 points the Bombers ran off to just 23 for the HPP mob. Razzle Storm v Ansett

Ansett were the high flyers on the night producing a 126-70 result against the Razzle Storm who just couldn’t keep up. Jerron Jamerson was cookin’ on the night, hitting a League high 55 to lift the Blues to their second win of the season. The Blues racked up 36pts in the first quarter to just 19 for the Storm and that ballooned out to a 58-33 lead at half time to pretty much put the game away early. Mitch O’Donoghue chipped in with 26 (including 6 treys), Max Davies had 23 and Freddy Webb 10. The Storm’s newest recruit, Karsten Oltrop (from Lightning) led the Razzle with 16, Chris Mahlstedt 14, Brendan Dell 12 and Nathan Radonich 11.

Uni Rebels v Palmerston Power

Palmerston Power staged a dramatic come from behind 70-62 victory over the Uni Rebels who appeared to be in the driver’s seat at the end of the third quarter. The Rebels had a five point lead heading into the last quarter 48-43, but the Power kept chip chip chipping away and finally hit the lead with 1:29 left in the encounter. Fisto Bizima hit a two pointer to give the Power a 63-62 advantage and Mattison Devine followed that up with a trey for a 66-62 lead. The Rebels never scored again as the Power added their remaining points from the free throw line for the win. Bizima led the Power with 23, Jesse Bell hit 19 and Devine finished up with 11. Tim Morris from the Rebels led all scorers with 34 with Marcus Ch’ng helping out with 11.

Eagles v Lightning

The Eagles accounted for the Lightning 88-80 in a close tussle that put the Birds on top of the ladder for the moment. Anthony Golden pumped in 46 points for the Birds (including 8 treys and 16 free throws!). Despite the fireworks from Golden the Lightning kept the game close with Austin Kisselev, Craig Martin and Cameron Bailey peppering the basket. At half time the Lightning only trailed by 8 at 50-42. By three quarter time it was 68-63, but they never got any closer than 4 for the remainder of the game. Golden closed it out from the charity strip with 4 straight shots. Eagle Jerrell Sanders lent support with 25. Kisselev finished up with 29 for the Lightning with Martin on 15 and Bailey 14.
