DBA League Results – Thursday & Friday 6 & 7 October  2016

Rounds 11 (Women) - 14 (Men)

League Women Round 11 -Thursday – Ansett v Razzle

Razzle won only their third game of the season as they pipped Ansett 53-48. The win lifted the Razzle off the bottom of the ladder and relegated the Blues to the cellar. The Green & Gold had to battle back from a 9pt deficit in the first quarter, but they did so in style, winning all the remaining quarters to claim the points. Leading the way for the Razzle was Genelle Bridge with 17 and Rebecca Murray added 11. Ruta Valiulyte hit 15 for the Blues with Erin Boyd on 13.

Lightning v Eagles

The Lightning swamped the Eagles 74-49 to put the Birds in a very tenuous position on the ladder as they struggle to maintain any consistency. Lightning have a firm grip on third place on the ladder at the moment just a ½ game behind Palmerston and appear to be gaining momentum at this stage of the season. The Eagles on the other hand are slipping and need to regain confidence and wins if they are to remain in a playoff position. The Lightning jumped out to a game winning 23-7 advantage in the first quarter and were never headed. Hayley Hendricksen led the Lightning with 18, Dominique Carbone had 12 and Grace Morcom 11. Michelle Friel was the only player in double figures for the Eagles with 17.

Palmerston Power v Tracy Village Jets

The Tracy Village Jets rumbled over the Palmerston Power 68-45 for their 26th straight victory. The Jets machine continues to sweep aside all challengers and looks to be headed towards another championship and maybe more records as well. The Bombers lifted off in the first quarter with a 17-9 run, lost a bit of ground in the second as the Power outscored them 17-12 and then regained control to outscore the Power in the second half 39-19. Kylie Duggan led the Jets with a game high 16 followed by Abby Cubillo 11 and Delsey Ah Wang 10. Brittany Ward, Jeska Matthews & Louise Turner led the Power with 10 apiece.

Ladder:                                                       Tracy Village Jets 10-0, Palmerston Power 6-4, Lightning 6-3, Eagles 3-7, Razzle 3-6 & Ansett 2-8

Next week Round 12:                                Thursday: Razzle v Palmerston Power 6:30pm. Friday: Eagles v Ansett 6:30pm & Lightning v Tracy Village Jets 8:00pm

Men

League Men – Round 14 - Thursday – Ansett v Palmerston Power

Palmerston handed Ansett their second loss in a row after their 9-0 start to the season. The Blues went down in a close one 78-75 as they slipped out of first place on the ladder for the first time. The Power won their third game in the last four to sneak into sole possession of third place on the ladder with a 7-4 record. The game was a close one all the way with the Power holding a 78-72 lead with just 13 seconds left on the clock, but it was enough despite a last second three pointer from the Blues Jerron Jamerson to cement the score-line at 78-75 in the Power’s favour. Shaquille Hohipa-Wilson led a group of four in double figures for the Power with 17. Jesse Bell had 16, Fisto Bizima 13 and Ben Streeter 10. For the Blues Jamerson hit a game high 29 with Matty Hunt on 22 and Brad Davis on 10.

Uni Rebels v Lightning

The return of live-wire guard Marcus Ch’ng has revived the chances of the Uni Rebels as they won their second game in a row 79-66 over the Lightning. Ch’ng has added his career 15ppg and an equal assists point total to the Rebel arsenal as they push to get into the final four before playoffs. They are currently just outside the four, but will no doubt become a factor. Lightning fell behind early to trail 17-27 after a quarter of play and still languished behind at 44-32 at the main break. The Rebels held off all challenges from the Lightning in the second half to claim the win and they did it from the charity stripe. The Rebels hit 20 free throws to just 8 for the Lightning and 8 of those 20 came from Ch’ng. Chad Bewley took game high scoring honours for the Rebels with 29 followed by Jerrell Sanders with 18 and Ch’ng with 12. Craig Martin led the Lightning with 23 and Alex Kisselev 17.

Monday 3 October rescheduled Round 4 results: Rebels beat Razzle 103-84 and Lightning defeated the Tracy Village Jets 87-56

Eagles v Razzle

The Eagles were in control of this one all the way as they edged into first place on the ladder with a 94-84 win over the Razzle. Alex Fertig & Joseph Johnson combined for 67 points as the high scoring duo once again dominated for the Birds. The Eagles led by 3 after one quarter of play and by 8 at half time 41-33. Fertig hit 14 of his 37 points in the third quarter as the Birds continued to pull away from the Green & Gold and they held a 68-55 lead with a quarter to play. The Razzle put in a challenge, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the lead the Birds had built up. Johnson finished with 30 while Reed Ridder hit 21 for the Razzle with Brendan Dell adding 19, Nathan Radonich 17 and Kayden Malseed 14.
