DBA League Results – Thursday/Friday 10 & 11 March 2016

Round 5

League Women – Thursday – Palmerston Power v Eagles

The Palmerston Power squeaked home past the hard finishing Eagles 55-51 to record their third win of the season. The Power struck back in the third quarter after trailing 32-25 at half time. Brittany Ward and Louise Turner led the Power fight back as the led the Power on a 16-8 three quarter run that put them up by just one point at 41-10 heading into the last quarter. The Power maintained the momentum to put enough points between the sides midway through the quarter that enabled them to hold on for the win…their best start to a season ever. Ward top scored with 15 and Turner finished with 12. Trish Graham hit 16 for the Birds with Faye Armstrong backing her up with 15.

Tracy Village Jets v Lightning

Tracy Village extended their win streak out to 13 with a 71-43 win over the Lightning. The Jets never looked troubled during the win. The Jets led by 3 at the first break, 6 at the half 30-24 and then outscored the Lightning 41-19 in the second half with a big 25-8 run in the last quarter. Four players hit double figures for the Bombers with Kylie Duggan leading the pack with 19. Danielle Carbone hit 11 for the Lightning.

Uni Rebels v Ansett

The Uni Rebels made a statement with their 67-63 victory over Ansett. After struggling so far this season the Rebels have welcomed back a number of players from the recent past. Jaylene Bonson & Justine Schmidt are back in the fold with the Boundry sisters, Jaylene & Edith, and will provide stiff competition for the rest of the teams in the comp. Bonson and Schmidt top scored with 19 apiece with Jaylene Boundry on 12 and Tulaha Jeffery 10. The Rebels set the stage for a tight finish after they took a 36-35 half time lead. They pushed that out to 10pts heading into the fourth quarter. They then weathered a strong fight back by Ansett to claim their first win of the season.

Men

League Men – Palmerston Power v Eagles

The Eagles handed the Palmerston Power their first loss since their Championship season grand final win. The Birds road roughshod over the Power to take out the encounter 95-79 to put them into a three way tie for the lead at the top of the ladder with an edge in percentage points. A big game from ‘JJ’ Joseph Johnson (38) gave the Birds an advantage and newcomer Joseph Prophet added to the Eagle firepower with 20pts in his first outing for the side. Jarrod Sheppard also hit double figures with 14 (including 4 treys). The Eagles led 49-40 at half time. Leading the Power was Fisto Bizima with a league career high of 22. He had support from four others who also hit double figures, Thomas Godwin leading that pack with 15.

Uni Rebels v Ansett

The Uni Rebels proved to be way too much to handle for the Ansett side who couldn’t keep up with the running Rebels. The Rebels charged away to be up 47-16 at half time…game over. Final score was 86-45. JB Pillard led the way for the Rebels with 33pts followed by Lance Schmidt with 22, Thomas Uppena 15 and Jamie Hamill 11. Freddy Webb & Brad Davis led the Blues with 11 each.

Tracy Village Jets v Lightning

Lightning clobbered the Tracy Village Jets 85-46 in a minor upset at this stage of the competition. Granted the Jets were without high scoring Travis Ellis, but the Lightning did everything right to run out winners of the contest. Lightning took a 20-16 first quarter lead, extended that out to 41-27 at the half and blew away the Jets in the third quarter with a 27-8 run to put the icing on the cake. Big man Craig Martin finished with 33 points, Austin Kisselev 25 and Cameron Bailey 21 to lead the Lighting into a first place tie on the ladder with two others. Jett Sukcharoen led the Bombers with 11 with Michael MacLean adding 10.
