Port's Star Sam Dwyer now becomes a Magpie

In the 2012 AFL Rookie Draft, 2011 Port Melbourne Premiership player Sam Dwyer was drafted by Collingwood with selection #28.

Originally recruited from the Geelong Falcons, Sam Dwyer joined the Port Melbourne Football Club, and began establishing himself right away in the club’s midfield, with knack for floating into the forward line, eventually kicking 120 goals for the Borough in 130 senior appearances.

Borough General Manager Barry Kidd said, “After hearing whispers of Sam being on the AFL radar over the past few years, it is great to see him finally be given a chance at AFL level, although myself along with all the fans and supporters will be sad to see him go, and we wish him all the best in his football endeavours”.

In 2009, he was recognised amongst his peers winning the Borough’s Best & Fairest. Sam was selected in the ‘VFL Team of the Year’ in 2011, the club’s premiership year, and polled strongly in the VFL’s Liston medal over the past few years.

Coach Gary Ayres added, “Sam’s a great talent, and it will be up to our current group to fill the void that will be left by him, not in just the way he plays, but his experience and knowledge of the game he has developed, and I hope he earns an opportunity to play senior footy at Collingwood”.

On behalf of all those involved at the club including the coaching and support staff, along with members and fans, we wish Sam Dwyer all the best in 2013.

In other news, former Port forward, Callum Sinclair after kicking 26 goals for Subiaco in the WAFL this season, was drafted as a rookie (selection #12) by the West Coast Eagles.
