Last week we made the trip down the Calder to Wycheproof to take on the demons.
The U13 boys come up against an undermanned demons outfit and had a very good 11 goal win. It was good to see the boys sharing the ball around and still continuing to play great team footy even though they were well and truly up on the scoreboard and could have blazed away. With 7 different goal kickers it was a great team performance. Best Players: Noah Barbary, Flynn McGarry, Bryce Baskin, Will Conlan, Jed Daniels, Isaac Durie.
With the Under 16s having a week off next up it was the Reserves and with a few inclusions in the senior side it meant that the reserves picked up a couple of quality players. Unfortunately we were slow out of the blocks again and were trailing at ¼ time. In the second ¼ it looked as though the tigers had the majority of possession but were unable to put scoreboard pressure on and again trailed at the long break. Unfortunately in the last half the theme continued and we were unable to get over the line and missed out narrowly by 5 points. It was great to see some of the younger blokes who are in their first year of playing reserves really standing up to the challenge. Best Players: Perry Roberts, Todd McInnes, Damon Bailey, Ant Bibby.
In the senior game this was our first big test coming up against what many believe to be the team to beat. In the first quarter we certainly had our share of the footy but our skill execution and lack of composure at times was costing us with 4 of the demons 5 goals coming directly from turn overs in our back half. So coming in at ¼ time only 3 goals down wasn’t too bad a result as the demons had had the majority of play. In the second term we really started to get our game going and momentum was starting to shift our way, the intensity and talking pressure really went up a notch from about the 15 minute mark, Nelso was having a purple patch taking 3 marks inside 50 with in about 5 minutes and Brad was marking everything that come his way. We had fought our way back to within 7points deep in the quarter but again Wyche had wrestled the momentum back and kicked a late one to steady their lead at the main break.
After half time the Demons come out firing and kicked 6.4 to our 1.2 in what was a very disappointing quarter for the tigers. To our credit we never gave up in the last kicking 5 goals but unfortunately the damage had been done in the third term and we ended up going down by 64 points. Best players: Brad Collins, Kyle Brasser, Ryan Sullivan, Tim Fitzgerald
Netball: With no 16 A or 13 A game only 5 games were played against Wycheproof with success in all bar the 16B game.
The 13A girls had a few new team members this week and they all combined well to have a strong win 37 to 3. Kate Alday gained the award.
Nakia' s 16B girls had a tough time against a taller side. They stayed with them for the first half but then found goals hard to come by in the second half and went down 24 to 10. Emily Weir gave her all for four quarters to earn the award.
The C grade girls played beautiful netball to come awaywith a solid win, 69 to 7. No matter where Sam positioned the girls they gave 100% and played some great passages of play. Chevaun Wight's accurate goaling performance earned her the award.
Our B grade coaches also experimented with different positions and combinations and the girls worked consistently to score a 56 to 14 win with Anna Coote being awarded the award for her consistency and on court leadership.
The score in the A grade match didn't reflect the pressure and tight defensive play by both sides. After a great start by the Tigers, Wycheproof dug deep and made our girls work hard for their 55 to 36 victory. The award winner was Ebony McLean.
Today we welcome Birchip-Watchem and once again all games will be in the stadium. We thank them for their understanding about our court situation and for agreeing to play indoors. Apologies yet again to our poor 13 B girls who are yet to get a run.
Hockey:Unfortunately no wins in hockey this week, we can't technically claim minkey - darn - although they did well scoring multiple goals. Jenna Alday for the red minkey team showed determination, and kept hard at the ball, while Judd Durie was apt in intensity and energy for the blue team, with these two players being awarded the Mars Bar award for the week.
The Under 13s (4-0) side held their ground well, but the Demons got four goals in. Flynn McGarry had a strong game, taking home the $5 SumBud award. The Underage (8-0) had a strong first half, and new recruit Heidi Simpson was awarded the $5 SumBud award by coach Joe Collins. Multiple under 13 players have been taking the step up into Underage, it will be great to see them develop further.
In the Women's game (4-0) the Tigers dominated the first half with multiple shots at goal, many times it was so close you could smell it! At the half time huddle the Demons must have got over their shakes, and they came out firing- scoring three quick goals. Although the intensity was there the girls just could quite catch them. Coach Kylie McKenzie kept at them the whole game, relentlessly going after that ball and the players voted her best on for the game.
The Men's game (4-0) was also strong, with our younger players dominating the field. The Tigers should be looking forward to honing their skills, and improving their offensive game - no longer are we always on the defence! Jamie Harker 'Squishie' was voted best on by his team mates.
Good luck to all grades today as we take on our nearest neighbours the Birchip Bulls.
Go Tiges!
