Coaches Code of Behaviour

Coaches of Heat Basketball players are expected to act in accordance with the following code of conduct. It includes expected behaviour detailed in the Gold Coast Region Code of Conduct.

  1. Respect the rights, dignity and worth of every athlete – within the context of the activity, treat every athlete equally regardless of sex, ethnic origin or religion.
  2. Ensure the athlete’s time spent with you is a positive experience – all athletes deserve equal attention and opportunities.
  3. Treat each athlete as an individual.
  4. Respect the talent, development stage and goals of each individual athlete.
  5. Be fair, considerate and honest with athletes.
  6. Be professional in and accept punctuality, responsibility for your actions and encourage your athletes to demonstrate the same qualities.
  7. Display control, respect, dignity and professionalism to all involved with the sport- this includes opponents, coaches, officials, administrators, the media, parents and spectators.
  8. Make a commitment to providing a quality service to your athlete by:
    -         
    Maintaining or improving your current coaching accreditation.
    -         
    Seeking continual improvement through performance appraisal and ongoing coach education.
    -         
    Providing a training program which is planned and sequential.
    -         
    Maintaining appropriate records.
  9. Operate within the rules and spirit of Basketball Australia, as well as the Australian Sports Drug Agency and teach your players to do the same.
  10. Any physical contact with athletes should be:
    -         
    Appropriate to the situation
    -         
    Necessary for the athlete’s skill development.
  11. Refrain from any intimate relationship or affair with you athlete; even if the relationship is with the consent of the athlete. You should avoid them.
  12. Avoid unaccompanied and unobserved activities with persons under the age of 18 wherever possible.
  13. Refrain from any form of personal abuse verbal, physical towards your athletes.
  14. Be alert to any forms of abuse directed towards your athletes form other sources whilst they are in your care.
  15. Refrain from any form of sexual harassment towards your athletes.
  16. Provide a safe environment for training and facilities and competition by ensuring;
    -    Equipment and facilities meet safety standards.
    -         
    Equipment, rules and the environment are appropriate for the age ability of the athletes.
  17. Show concern and caution towards sick and injured athletes.  Maintain the same interest and support towards sick and injured athletes as you do towards other athletes.
  18. Be a positive role model for Basketball and it’s athletes.
  19. Do not do anything which adversely affects or reflects on or discredits Basketball as a sport generally, Basketball Australia, Basketball Queensland, Gold Coast City Regional Basketball Association, the squad, competition, tournament, sponsor, official supplier or licensee, including without limitation, any illegal act or any act of dishonesty or fraud at any time.
  20. Do not bet on the outcome or any other aspect of the event and/or competition.
  21. Control your temper
    -   Do not abuse, threaten or intimidate.
    -         
    An event or competition official
    -         
    A selector, other coach’s, manager or other squad official; or
    -         
    Any participants
  22. Report immediately to Gold Coast City Regional Basketball Association any offer of a bribe or other benefit to fix or throw an event or competition in attempt to achieve a manufactured outcome to an event or competition, or otherwise influence inappropriately the outcome of any other aspects of an event or competition.
  23. At all times provide honest, complete and accurate information to Gold Coast City Regional Basketball Association in relation to the performance of a participant.

  24. Remember that young people participate for pleasure and winning is only part of the fun.
  25. Never ridicule or yell at a young player for making a mistake or not coming first.
  26. Be reasonable in your demands on players’ time, energy and enthusiasm.
  27. Ensure that the time players spend with you is a positive experience. All young people are deserving of equal attention and opportunities.
  28. Avoid overplaying the talented players; the just average need and deserve equal time.
  29. Ensure that equipment and facilities are appropriate to the age and ability of all players.
  30. Show concern and caution towards sick and injured players. Follow the advice of a physician when determining whether an injured player is ready to recommence training or competition.
  31. Obtain appropriate qualifications and keep up to date with the latest coaching practices and the principles of growth and development of young people.
  32. Any physical contact with a young person should be appropriate to the situation and necessary for the player’s skill development.
  33. Respect the rights, dignity and worth of every young person regardless of their gender, ability, cultural background or religion.
