AAMI Final Moved to Midday

This Saturday’s AAMI Country Championship Final between the Newcastle Rebels and Illawarra at Cessnock Sportsground has been brought forward due to the current weather and ground conditions being experienced at the venue.

Originally scheduled to kick off at 1.45pm the main game will now kick off at Midday to ensure the best possible conditions are offered to the 2010 AAMI Championship Final.

Country Rugby League CEO Mr Terry Quinn felt the move was necessary after he inspected the venue this morning. Mr Quinn said ‘after looking at the surface we have no doubt that the field is fit to play the two games as scheduled. The Cessnock Club and their ground staff have done a wonderful job in ensuring that we will get these games on the park as planned, however, taking into consideration the conditions and the expected forecast, we feel that the best course of action is to play the AAMI Championship match first giving both teams the setting suitable for an entertaining final.”

Mr Quinn added “all junior and the majority of senior rugby league matches in the area have been postponed for this weekend giving all fans in the Newcastle and Hunter Region’s an opportunity to get out and watch two great games of footy. Newcastle and Illawarra have forged a great rivalry over the past few years and we are expecting that rivalry to continue when they go head to head tomorrow afternoon.”

Newcastle will wrap up its preparations this evening at Newcastle's International Hockey Centre with the venue the only place left for the Rebels to train due to the weather conditions being experienced in the Hunter.

Newcastle coach Peter Walsh believes that whilst the preparation has been less than ideal his squad will go into the final ready and able. Walsh said "this week has been disrupted by the weather but regardless of the conditions we have had to overcome we will go into tomorrow's match confident of getting the result we want. Illawarra would be experiencing the same problems down there but both sides are professional enough to overcome that and put their best foot forward."

The Tier 2 Semi Final between Group XI and Group 19 will now be played at 1.45pm.
