Defending Champs Bundled Out by Goannas
The defending premiers of the Newcastle Rugby League Tooheys Cup, the Wyong Roos have been sensationally bundled out of the 2010 premiership race at Morrie Breen Oval by a determined and passionate Cessnock Goannas side.
The Roos limped into the Minor Semi Final after a bruising encounter against the Western Suburbs Rosellas the week before took its toll on their star studded line up and Cessnock took full advantage by enticing them into another physical encounter.
Running into a stiff breeze in the first half the Goannas took the ascendency by keeping the scoreline within reach at 6 points to 4 at the break. Upon resumption and after turning down wind the Coalfield's lads turned the blow torch on the wounded Roos and made them pay in every facet of the match. They won the battle on the ground and at the ruck and were successful in keeping the newly crowned 'Player of the Year' Mitch Williams quiet by limiting the Roos yards through the middle of the ground.
In a more determined and passionate display the Goannas did plenty to overcome the disappointment of the 2009 premiership decider and move one step closer to complete redemption with a 34 - 14 point victory.
Cessnock will now meet the loser of the Maitland versus Western Suburbs Major Semi Final in next week's Preliminary Final to be held on Sunday at Kurri Kurri's Sylvester Real Estate Sportsground.
